Tomatillos are related to tomatoes, they're in the Solanaceae though tomatoes are Solanum (formerly Lycopersicum) while tomatillos are Physalis. Gooseberries are unrelated plants in the genus Ribes. The two plants aren't even in the same order, tomatillos are Solanales while gooseberries are Saxifragales. It's like mixing up chocolate and carob.

The flavor of cape gooseberries is more like a tomato.
