In this video, I will be camping overnight in the woods with just a few items of basic kit – a poncho, a cup, some dried beef, a bottle of water and a Swiss Army …
You're still using your Ferro rods wrong. Hold the steel and pull the Ferro away from it. That way the tinder isn't dislodged and your rod won't break….
Just got my fire-ant and helix tinder to go with the VIC Huntsman – isn't it an awesome combo?
The Firefly-ferrorods are small and tender, so you want to suspend it almost the whole lenght- either with your finger or with a split piece of stick. To strike it, I sharpened the downside of the parcel-carrier, IMHO the awl is too short to see what you're doing.
Your way of batoning will quickly loosen the joints – watch Felix Immler (the Victorinox guy) using wedges for the most of splitting, the blade only for starting it.
Mors Kochanski is my very hero, he not only taught survival, he did lots of research and developed and invented completely new solutions – that's why I consider him to be a genius.
I' m not sure I can go minimalist around the 4 th or 5 th of december, its getting quite cold in Canada but I like the idea very much of giving a helping hand to cancer research as I also lost my mother of cancer 7 years ago . I will give a donation here in Quรฉbec as all advancement in science will benefits worldwide eventually , thanks for the video and your kind heart
Loved the video,,johnSheppey……………………………………………
what's the brand of the poncho ?
Great video! Loved watching it! Wouldn't have got you much, but if expecting rain, stick the cup out! Maybe even divert off the poncho? Just a thought.. I'd struggle with only a litre of water lol.. so hats off to you.
14:45 In a real survival situation these knives are rubbish
Great video again but Felix Immler is the SAK king and worth watching too for great tips regarding how to get the most out of a Swiss Army Knife. ๐
Ok โฆ ๐ค
Iโm in trouble โฆ normally I wear Australian Blundstone boots โฆ no shoelace โบ๏ธ

PS. nice of you sir to show that not everything works out the way you planed it.
Not a chance. Cancer research is a scam.
Great video enjoyed it
Nice to see you out and about, Simon.
Really good challenge and well done!
Didn't need the musical intro especially as I was wearing headphones
Here's a tip: burdock is a biennial so next time you want a firm juicy root in autumn, look for the rosette of leaves. The plants with burrs have flowered and fruited and are on their way out.
Practice more you walked past at least ten edible foods look up felix himmler to sort out your knife craft
if you baton like that with a swiss army knife you will ruin it. pls watch some felix imler he is the GOD of swiss army knifes and can teach you all you need to know
Just to let you know Simon put your knife at a 90 degree angle when you baton wood. Felix immler channel would tell you how to do that. He makes everything with his Swiss army knife only.
I have carryed Swiss army knifes since I was 7 years old. I like them a lot UK leagle. Or any where in US. We are also be restricted on what kinds of knifes we can carry in different states. Like this video a lot. You can do a lot with a Swiss army knife.
Good video. Here's a tip for making stakes with a SAK. Cut the end at a severe angle so you don't have to carve a point. You can make two points at once this way. I cut the ends flat for pounding in the ground.
The wire striper on the cap lifter on the Swiss Army knife makes an excellent striker for that fero rod. Works very well. Try it if you haven't
Nice work!
Impressively over-engineered bed.
Rehydrated biltong for dinner and breakfast! what a great idea. Comes pre-spiced and salted.
The little Swiss Army knife that could ๐
– super vid
What no sleeping bag, definitely needed that long fire. Great raised bed. Iโm fairly new to wild camping at the tender age of 62. Learning so much. Now I know why I carry a Swiss Army knife every day, though mine does not have the saw.
Great video as always. Reminds me of doing my survival badge at scouts!!
Blimey, You certainly like to challenge yourself, I couldnโt do that!! I need to find myself a bloke like you, all the men I meet can just about tie their own shoelaces!
Standing room only in the UK before too long.
Heeeeheeee, cutting across the grain is when you find out whether your blade is macho or nacho… Thanks for a proper full on out there everything is wet, cold and hard to do vid. Simon = Macho! ; )
Great video Simon found it very interesting
Lovely video as usual Simon. I will be joining the Mors memorial camp on the weekend of the 5th with Neil. Might cheat with a sleeping bag though!
Nice one buddy cheers keep em coming ๐๐๐๐๐๏ธ

I am not sure if others have given you this advice. If you user that ferial rod by scraping along the narrow edge you will find it less likely to break also putting a finger under the end help. It strikes a good spark along the narrow edge. The back of the saw is the best tool for striking on it.
When buttoning with the SAK one should have the blade at a right angle to the body of the knife – this reduces the chance of damaging the hinge of the knife. Great video.
I love all the Videos you, Andy, Mike, Richard, Haze, Joe, Scrambled-o, and Shawn make. I will say it was good to see a good ole down and dirty Bushcraft video. This was the type of video that got me hooked on all you guys.
Mors is looking down and smiling my friend. Great job. What are the bushcraft pants that you are wearing? They look study and they hold a lot.
the rerro rod needs to be set down while striking(tip planted next to tinder) and remember the size of the rod and use the thin edge on rod to strike. I have some of the firefly ferro rods and the first thing i did was break one by using to much pressure on the rod. Also tortoise has the FireAnt has six rods and six tinder.
So completely enjoy your videos. Just off a deer camp trip up North Michigan…hot tent and good food with friends. Blessings my friend.
I admire your ability to rough it, but I would never, deliberately, put myself in this situation.
It's happened to me, accidentally, once or twice; I can't say I'm enamoured with the prospect of a repetition.
Good stuff, though. ๐
I grew using a Swiss Army knife for everyday carry cuz Dad always carried one. I never seen one used for survival essentially. I loved this video! As always keep โem coming because youโre my favorite!
Love the minimul approach Simon realy tests ones ability and resourcefulness. Love the jumper could you let us have a link for were you could purchase one from pkease. Cheers Rob
Simon…. nice to see you working in the bush again. Liked your "knife" review and the terrific ferro rod demo. One of the things I enjoy about your vids is your willingness to show the good, the bad and the ugly. Keep crafting, my friend and Best wishes….. Ax
why did you leave a fire burning ??
When using the toothpick ferro rods, 1) put a stick behind it so you don't break it and 2) press the teeth of the saw blade into the material in front of your tinder and move the ferro rod across its back. In addition, don't baton wood with you SAK open, it will damage the lock.
Mors…. what a guy, thanks for the introduction
