Just got my fire-ant and helix tinder to go with the VIC Huntsman – isn't it an awesome combo?
The Firefly-ferrorods are small and tender, so you want to suspend it almost the whole lenght- either with your finger or with a split piece of stick. To strike it, I sharpened the downside of the parcel-carrier, IMHO the awl is too short to see what you're doing.
Your way of batoning will quickly loosen the joints – watch Felix Immler (the Victorinox guy) using wedges for the most of splitting, the blade only for starting it.
Mors Kochanski is my very hero, he not only taught survival, he did lots of research and developed and invented completely new solutions – that's why I consider him to be a genius.

Great video! Loved watching it! Wouldn't have got you much, but if expecting rain, stick the cup out! Maybe even divert off the poncho? Just a thought.. I'd struggle with only a litre of water lol.. so hats off to you.

Here's a tip: burdock is a biennial so next time you want a firm juicy root in autumn, look for the rosette of leaves. The plants with burrs have flowered and fruited and are on their way out.

Just to let you know Simon put your knife at a 90 degree angle when you baton wood. Felix immler channel would tell you how to do that. He makes everything with his Swiss army knife only.

I have carryed Swiss army knifes since I was 7 years old. I like them a lot UK leagle. Or any where in US. We are also be restricted on what kinds of knifes we can carry in different states. Like this video a lot. You can do a lot with a Swiss army knife.

Good video. Here's a tip for making stakes with a SAK. Cut the end at a severe angle so you don't have to carve a point. You can make two points at once this way. I cut the ends flat for pounding in the ground.

What no sleeping bag, definitely needed that long fire. Great raised bed. Iโ€™m fairly new to wild camping at the tender age of 62. Learning so much. Now I know why I carry a Swiss Army knife every day, though mine does not have the saw.

I am not sure if others have given you this advice. If you user that ferial rod by scraping along the narrow edge you will find it less likely to break also putting a finger under the end help. It strikes a good spark along the narrow edge. The back of the saw is the best tool for striking on it.
When buttoning with the SAK one should have the blade at a right angle to the body of the knife – this reduces the chance of damaging the hinge of the knife. Great video.

the rerro rod needs to be set down while striking(tip planted next to tinder) and remember the size of the rod and use the thin edge on rod to strike. I have some of the firefly ferro rods and the first thing i did was break one by using to much pressure on the rod. Also tortoise has the FireAnt has six rods and six tinder.

I admire your ability to rough it, but I would never, deliberately, put myself in this situation.

It's happened to me, accidentally, once or twice; I can't say I'm enamoured with the prospect of a repetition.
    Good stuff, though. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Simon…. nice to see you working in the bush again. Liked your "knife" review and the terrific ferro rod demo. One of the things I enjoy about your vids is your willingness to show the good, the bad and the ugly. Keep crafting, my friend and Best wishes….. Ax

When using the toothpick ferro rods, 1) put a stick behind it so you don't break it and 2) press the teeth of the saw blade into the material in front of your tinder and move the ferro rod across its back. In addition, don't baton wood with you SAK open, it will damage the lock.
