I started strawberries this year from bareroot packs I purchased at Home Depot. I only bought 2 packs an got 16 plants out of them combined. I soaked them for about an hour then planted them up in small pots an put them under my lights. And they have all grown up pretty well an I recently planted them in my tower (similar to a green stalk but purchased from dollar tree). I did 3 plants on every other level an then the opposite level doing a good flower to attract pollinators to the strawberry blossoms. I already have 2 plants blooming . Well 1 has actually opened but 2 with blooms. I’m in southern Michigan Zone 6a. I started hardening them off about a week ago an then planted them in the tower. I had to bring the tower in last night though because of the snow an frost warnings for today an tomorrow. The trick I learned with bare roots is but the packs as soon as the box stores put them out. This year I got them end of February. Last year I got them around end of April or early may an they were all dead already. An then it’s hard but try to see through the bag their in an check for sprouts. That goes for most bulbs or bare roots you get like that… always check for life an pick the ones with the best life. I did the same with the Dahlia tubers I got an have success this year with them as well an didn’t last year because I waited to late to buy them an they had dried up in the packages.

Such a delicious looking leaning tower of strawberries you have set as a backdrop today Kim! The various containers, raised beds, trellises, and colors you have there are so inviting to enjoy. But here as the snow from Sunday night has not melted much, the morning's sunrise today brings … are you ready … more snow. Happy Gardening! -Bob…

Hello from VA! I had great success with bare root strawberries this year. They arrived (25 roots from Park Seed) too early to plant in the ground, so I up-potted half in 3" containers, ran out of potting mix, and stuck the rest in a bowl of water in my kitchen for a few weeks. For both, I made sure the crowns were above water/soil line. To my surprise, the ones in the water bowl grew like crazy and developed way more substantial roots and leaves, and both had the same light access. Anyway, they are all now planted in my strawberry tower and doing great. I saved a lot of money doing this. Hope that helps!

Hi Kim! I see the hanging basket liner is a smart pots liner; but where do you get the shell portion to put it in?
Thanks for all the strawberry tips, my 2 boys are so excited for our strawberries this year!
