I was so floored by the custards in Japan when I was there. I was not super happy with the flower one showed, but I got I got one from a vendor at Tsukiji market that was phenomenal and even some of the more expensive ones at the convenience stores were great with a nice egg and vanilla flavor. Honestly, the eggs, in general were just better. It took me a long time to find an egg as good as the ones in Japan and the things made with those eggs are greatly improved by them. The onsen egg from the hot springs were also a very new and interesting experience.

Love Crème caramel pudding. Used to make them all the time when I was a chef years ago. 😋. The Dariole moulds are a nightmare to clean though afterwards 😂

dr.oetker is a german company. It has a very large pudding selection in austria and germany. I am not sure, but i think flan is the same as pudding, maybe minor differences, since i always connected flans more to the north of germany.

It’s so funny, because growing up, flan was THE last thing that I would choose as a dessert. Now, it’s definitely on my radar. Thank you Barb, for sending our boys these boxes to make and to try. I would’ve thought that the Goya brand would’ve been the best. Good to know that the Royal brand is better. I will definitely give it a try. Thanks guys!

Satoshi–you did a marvelous job with the flan mixes Barb sent! They all set so beautifully and look creamy and jiggly and delicious! They also made a lovely presentation.
One wonderful thing about all these mixes is that they are lacto-ovo vegetarian friendly, I believe. None use gelatin to set the flan–they use carrageenan, which is a derivative of seaweed. And all but Dr. Oetker (which includes egg powder) can be made vegan by substituting coconut milk or other non-dairy milk for the regular milk. Pretty cool. The lack of egg in the Royal and Goya flan is probably why they didn't taste egg-y at all.
Thank you both for your honest reviews of these items, and thanks to Barb for sending them! ❤️❤️❤️

It's fun to see that you eat German (Dr. Oetker is a German brand) pudding sent from the US in Japan😂 you're absolutely right Sinichi. Powder mixtures are definitely better than ready to eat ones and homemade is definitely much better. There's nothing better than homemade 😀

Will go and look for the Royal brand…didn't know they make a flan one. Best to make from scratch…will be so much creamier and Caramel cooked long enough for a stronger taste.

There are so many styles of flan… Some of them I find very difficult to eat because they're super rich with loads of sugar, eggs, evaporated milk, condensed milk, even cream cheese.

Other types, which I much prefer, are subtly sweet, light and not too rich. Some instant mix flans are very light and easy to eat, I remember loving the Jell-O brand one when I was a kid. Half a liter would go down so easily. I'd have to be careful not to eat too much. 😅

Dr. Oetker is big here as well in the Netherlands for instant desserts and baking goods. But don't think we have this flan here. We have vanilla pudding but there is no caramel sauce.

In California where I'm from, flan isn't popular. We do eat chocolate pudding, which is good. We do have another type of pudding they call tapioca, which I didn't like. Thanks guys for trying flan!!

Here in the Philippines 🇵🇭 we call it 'Leche Flan' (leche – milk) and its my fave desert! We don't have instant flan here, so we cook it traditionally, i like mine when the caramel part is slightly burnt-wow! 😋Hope to taste Japanese version of flan soon😊

Dr Oetker ist eine deutsche Marke und ich wundere mich immer wieder, dass sie in so vielen Ländern verkauft werden. Ich mag den von Dr Oetker sehr gerne weil er nicht so süß ist. 🙏🏼🥰🌺

Put 1- 1/2 teaspoons of sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of water into the bottom of a ramekin and microwave it until it caramelises but not too dark. Mix 1/2 cup of evaporated milk, one teaspoon sugar, 1/4 tsp vanilla, and one egg and pour this on top of the hot sugar. Put this back in the microwave and cook it on defrost or low until it sets. This is an easy way of making flan in the microwave
