Hi Mary, I decided to make the pie crust this evening following your printed recipe and directions. I discovered that you do not mention the water at all in the ingredients list or in the instructions. Since I have made crust before, I realized that was missing and thankfully was able to go back to your video to see how much. Hope this helps someone else.

Hi Mary, from the UK. My Mam used lard for her savoury pastry – she was born 1927.
Butter and lard together for pastry is what I was taught at school.
My Dad found pastry made with lard only, was less rich and didn't give him indigestion.
Also she didn't bake blind. Instead she cooked on a tin plate placed on top of a baking sheet, to catch the heat of the oven on the underside of the pie and therefore cook the pastry – it was never soggy. Once it looked cooked through she placed it lower in the oven until she felt it was long enough to cook the base pastry. As it was a gas oven it was much cooler in the bottom of the oven.
    Love your channel, many thanks

Love, love, love this recipe, Mary. We will have to make a sweet potato version this year as we did not grow pumpkin this year though. But it should still be tasty. I grew up with the Ingalls too and love the way they overcame so much and appreciated life.
Hope you have a blessed Thanksgiving week, my friends!

I use my Great Grandmother’s recipe, she was born in 1882. Not sure where she got her recipe. Here recipe makes 4 pies. It calls for milk, sugar and we have alway use white sugar, cornstarch, eggs, ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, and salt. And of course pumpkin. Bake 425 for 45 min.

Laura and her daughter lived long lives. I know Laura died in her 90s just years before this book was published. Did she have anything to do with the recipes? Obviously I don't have the book. 😅

I was excited to see you make pumpkin pie but greatly disappointed that you used canned pumpkin purée. You didn’t even explain how we could make our own suitable pumpkin purée. For those of us who don’t live in the USA, pumpkin purée or pumpkin pie filling isn’t something I can get at the supermarket. So much for making everything from scratch 🙁

Very nice! Would you consider making Olivia’s applesauce cake from the Waltons or is it considered private due to copy right. I watched the Waltons Christmas and saw the recipe being used. Thanks!

The texture between fresh pumpkin puree and canned is totally different in flavor and texture….it takes hours to prepare fresh pumpkin puree….here in southern indiana if they didnt have sugar they would have used molasses or honey….

Hi Mary, I sure enjoyed this video, the pumpkin pie looks delicious! In the actual Little House on the Prairie book, I think Ma once used a green pumpkin to make a pie and Pa exclaimed that it tasted like apple pie! Is this recipe in the book that you have?

I don't recall my grandmother (born in the early 1890s) ever pre-baking her pie crusts; and they were never soggy. She did use lard though (and dotted her apple filling with butter). I've forgotten the brand name of the company, but the lard came in a white and green box. My dad used to fuss with her about cooking and baking with lard back in the 60s, when it as you said, "fell out of favor", but my grandmother lived to see 94+ healthy years.

Thanks for sharing. We're doing well. Lee dropped off Daniel today as Daniel wouldn't listen to authority figures. He doesn't listen to any authority figures twenty percent of the time. He's always been like that. We walked to get some pizza and walked back. He wouldn't come inside for a long time. My hands were freezing by the time we came in. I tried out my new Hobo bag. It doesn't fit everything I carry in my Teacher Totes but it carries the essentials and can be worn cross-body.

Mary, I am in search for what my grandma called Christmas rice pudding I didn't like it as a kid but I think I might, now that my taste buds have changed It had green and red cherries and I'm not sure what else may be raisins or just candied fruit cake fruit. In your recipes have you ever heard of this I'm not the wing it kind of cook I don't mix flavors well in my head and have them come out right

My mom would only use lard in her pie crusts. She refused to use crisco shortening. Her brand which I have had difficulty finding lately is Burns Lard. And she made the best pastry and pies

Back when lard was 'evil', I was told – very emphatically – by my dad that I wasn't allowed to substitute margarine/shortening for lard when I made the crust recipe for pasties. He didn't care if it was healthier or not; he wanted the crust I got using lard. The recipe is very similar to pie crust (and I've used it for both). Now I wouldn't even consider using anything else. Although I might consider adding a touch of butter if it's for pies.

Watching this as my chicken pot pie is cooking in the oven. I should have seen this video first. I usually use a hot oven from dinner as my excuse for baking."Well, we can't let all that wonderful heat go to waste can we?" I recently found this book at a second hand shop. I was so thrilled as it was my favorite show as a little girl. Looking forward to making this pie. You are so sweet and thanks for sharing your wisdom and enthusiasm.💟
