Caroline…. Snowshoeing is more of a shuffle than a walk. If you do that it will be less tiring when the snow is deeper, and you'll stay more on-top of the snow rather than sinking in.

We were down in San Rafael around that time. I also had diesel heater issues, warrantied it out for another and still same issue. What I found was the hose causing restriction in turn causing the heater to fail. It was about the same, running for a few then shutting off. I was getting code E09, I changed to a hose with less ripple and it’s worked flawless since.
That looked absolutely nothing like any pho I've had, and I've had a lot of pho! Either way, it still looked delicious, and I swear I could smell that rich beefy smell through the screen. I hope y'all get that heater situation figured out, because 12 degrees is a little cold to be going without any extra warmth.
Hey just a heads up on your diesel heater. You need to have it sitting on something and the exhaust pointing down. This is why you are having the issues you are. Hope you guys figured it out and stayed warm.

Why no tire chains for ice conditions? Is there some outlanding rule against them?
Wonder if your heater was running lean due to altitude. Might try running it in alpine mode
I have a similar heater and it has what's called plateau mode which I've used up to 12k ft. Maybe try pressing the screen brightness and ok buttons at the same time and two mountain peaks should illuminate on screen. Hope this helps 🤙
I really like the simplicity of the Jet Boil cooking system. Compact yet efficient.
One of the issue is the exhaust on the heater… it needs to be pointed slightly downwards from horizontal to allow condensation to escape, and the muffler is also directional, the little weep hole needs to be pointed downwards.
