We had brown sauce with it but we always boiled the potatoes separately in their jackets. I take it u did wash the cabbage. We also skimmed off the salt before we added the cabbage.

They think the same thing about dutch food, that it's boring and bland. But boiling potatoes with kale or carrots and onions and then draining and mashing it with butter and milk, then eat it with sausage, or meatballs and gravy and fried bacon is just delicious. They don't know what they are missing! Or their produce is just bland to begin with, that's possible. They get so precious about blending up one kale leaf for their health when we use giant bags full for dinner and it tastes great. Not suffering at all. haha They just don't appreciate the old ways.

This reminds me so much of my Irish Mum’s bacon and cabbage, she used to pour some of the cooking water over the potatoes and meat so it didn’t get dry! Just smashing x

This reminds me of a jiggs dinner (newfoundland) it is made with boiled pork , moose, or salt beef and all in one pot with cabbage , turnips, squash, and carrotts. It's absolutely delicious with a little dollop of sour cream or applesauce…..mmmmmm
