You know whats sad is i made food like this all time whether its ham, potato and cabbage ir ham and beans.. My girlfriend always turns up her nose at it but if i cook something else she sure as hell will eat it.. Sometimes i turn leftovers into soup and it tastes good. Ive asked her what the hell would we eat if i didnt know how to cook.. Shes gotten spoiled because i went to culinary school but some ham and beans is up my alley..

Why all the spices, the taste of the natural ingredients and the marrow from the bone give the soup plenty of flavor. Something to try if you enjoy tomatoes is a can of diced tomatoes or just put a shot of ketchup in the bowl.

When using a insta pot electric pressure cooker dont have to soak beans or wait all day for beans and dont have to stand over the stove back and forth. Using my ham I had for Christmas. I cook my beans in chicken broth or bone broth

This is the best. I tried it two years ago and still do it this way. Btw I thought I hated beans until this recipe. I was making this for my husband… I tried it and now I enjoy it too.

Always sort your beans for stones and wash as they are field picked & packaged.
You can use chicken broth also to boil your pork hocks in but because they are always cut with a meat saw not with the beans but, BOIL: Chicken broth, 4-6 ham hocks (rinsed off), a couple stalks celery, 2 onions, 1 tsp poultry seasoning, 1/2 tsp pepper, (hold off on salt till done boiling), 4-6 chicken wings, if you have it a pinch of saffron, water to cover, & boil 4 hrs. Slowly, "THEN STRAIN (fine strainer) THE BROTH" as there are or could be chips of Bone in the broth from the hocks, taste broth, throw away vegtables it boiled with , and sort meat out of hocks, add to broth: beans, meat, carrots, chopped celery, chopped onion, parsley, additional seasoning if necessary, add extra ham if needed, cook slowly beans till tender add water if needed for richer bean soup thin with canned chicken broth. Use a heavy tripple bottom pan to prevent sticking/scorching, still stir often.

I have always soaked my beans over night, and only use ham bones that's where you get all the flavor, and how I feel is, anything worth cooking, or eating for that matter, is worth the "patience" to do it right.

This would be okay … But to really take it up 3 levels, if you don't have a ham bone, get some ham hocks or smoked pork neck bones. Both cheap with amazing flavor. You have something to learn about the "best" Bean Soup !!! And Dill ? Really ? Maybe a pinch or two of thyme but a whole tsp of Dill will overpower everything …
