Former captains going back and becoming GMs of their old team? Seems to be a pretty good formula: Yzerman, Sakic, Nieuwendyk, and Robitaille (not a GM but has been Kings president for 15 years).
I think there's a ton of value in having been a recent player, knowing the grind of what it takes to go all the way to the cup final, who also understands the market and organization really well.
You can hire analytics guys… that's easy. They are literally a dime a dozen. Find a hockey guy who's seen the Stanley Cup Finals, been a captain, and knows the city/team/organization.
