I've cooked plenty cummin from Washington, you did right using scissors that's the easiest ) then I would put little slices of butter in the cuts so it would be moist. My seasoning would go in the cuts to but only a little the rest would go on the outside. At least that's the way I use to cook them but everyone does it differently.
