To reduce the amount I spend I go into the store at Walmart so I can purchase several items from the deli. To do that I go about 9:30 -10am. When the deli first opens they have several items with a price reduction. Their Deli made medium pizzas are usually reduced to $3-$3.50 a pizza. The end pieces of deli meat they pre slice every morning and prepackaged it in 1/2-3/4 lb pkgs. These packages are $1.25-$1.75 per lb cheaper. They always have some sort of ham and turkey. They usually have some sort of cheese too. If I want more than 1/2 lb of deli meat I just get 2 packages. I also buy several 2nd day reduced roasted chickens every time I find them. I try to buy 4 of those chickens each month. At my store they are reduced to $4.19 a chicken. I try to get 2 at a time. I remove the meat and shred it and freeze it in 3 cup portions which is about 1/2 a chicken per meal. I put the carcasses and skin In my crockpot with water, salt and pepper, a carrot, onion and 2 stalks of celery and cook on low for 12 to 24 hours. I freeze this bone broth in 1 cup and 1 quart freezer bags to use all month in cooking. The meat from 4 chickens which cost me $16.76 gets me 8 meals per month. I use the cooked chicken for casseroles, Soups, chicken and dumplings, noodles or rice. Tacos, burritos, enchiladas, quesadillas, pot pies, BBQ and Buffalo chicken sandwiches and salads. So lots of uses and that chicken cost me $2.10 a meal which is cheaper than hotdogs. In fact with 8 meals per month using this chicken plus leftovers I seldom cook or buy any other cuts of chicken. There is so much I can use it for and it is such a big savings that to me it just makes sense. I have bought chickens like this for 12 years. I started when I could no longer work and was waiting for my disability to be approved. That was a 3.5 year process. Money was horribly tight as we dropped our income by 60 percent a month because I made more money than Mark but we still had the same bills. In 2010 when I started buying chickens like this they were $1.89 each. So I could serve chicken for less than $1 a meal. With meat prices so high right now I buy the manager special reduced for quick sale items too. I get the best deals for that at Kroger and SaveALot. Walmart marks down some meats but not as good of markdowns as the other 2 stores. So one morning a week I go to both stores and I get the meat markdowns and any sale items that store has that week. I use that meat for next week's meals since I never know what Markdowns I will find. So I freeze it all immediately and those are the items I cook the following week. Doing these tips and tricks I have not noticed much of an increase in my grocery budget. The savings I get offsets the increases in other areas. I also only buy fresh produce from the farmers market from items coming into season, from the grocery store ads and twice a month I get a Misfits Market Box. I started getting Misfits in the spring of 2020 when groceries were hard to find. We eat more fresh fruits and vegetables this way than we ever have. My box Saturday had 3 lb apples, 1 lb strawberries, a pineapple, 2 limes, a head of iceberg lettuce, butter lettuce, a head of cabbage, 2 bell peppers, cremini mushrooms, 2 yellow squash, 1 bunch green onions, 3 lb new potatoes, 2 lb fresh green beans, 3 slicing tomatoes, a pint of cherry tomatoes, a bag of mini cucumbers, bunch of carrots, 2 bunch of kale and 2 lemons and all that was $42.17 including shipping and it is organic produce. So I get a box twice a month. There usually is about 100 fresh produce items but they sell all kinds of stuff now.
