Mary, I was wondering if you have a Grocery Outlet in your area? We just got one and they are family owned which I love and many organic products at a bargain. We’ve been stocking our prepper pantry with things from there. We normally would get these products at Sprouts or WF but they are a fraction of the cost at Grocery Outlet. Would love you to check it out and let us know what you think.

That buy what you eat advice has been bugging me for some time. That may work for your 6 month working pantry but for emergencies you need to stock up what you can store long term since you never know when you’ll really need it. I’ve been collecting ration book recipes from the US, Canada, Australia but especially the UK where the rations were strictest. It was all about adaptation like the depression, it was about using what was available and remotely affordable

I came from a big family (six children!) so I learned all about meal extenders from an early age. I didn’t know it was an extender, it was just good food to me. Lol. It carried on through my adult years and though we have fewer children, which means a little more protein per person, I use extenders in all meals I make. We have a lot of casseroles and bakes or potato, rice or pasta one pot meals. One day, my children will take those extender skills with them to use in their family kitchen. The “lean-time” meals of childhood have certainly trained me well for times such as this.

Loved this video. I have watched dozens of your videos and loved them all but I have to say this is easily my top favorite. Thank you so much for all the hard work you put into your videos. Short story my mother was a child in Jamaica during the depression. One of their traditional dishes is called ‘rice & peas’. Usually pinto, small red beans or pigeon peas are used. During the depression rice became scarce on the island so they would use spaghetti, breaking up the spaghetti into rice size pieces.

Hi Mary and friends, I’d like to store the powdered whole milk. I’ve tried however it’s not a product we use regularly in our working pantry as we much prefer our local pasture raised fresh milk. Any ideas of how to continue to store this powdered whole milk alternative and not let it go to waste? My only thought was to buy and donate before it expires but that can get expensive. Thanks for any advice here!

Thank you for mentioning that folks need to use iodized salt. I have implemented a lot of you advice already. I just have to give up the convenience of chicken breasts. I do make our dog's food using bone in skin on thighs so that she gets the benefit of bone broth (no onions or garlic or salt). We keep lots of both honey and white sugar with the baking supplies. I make lots of pizza dough (which freezes well) but i don't make sandwich bread. Instead of taco Tuesdays we have pizza Wednesdays

I built a FIFO can rack that self feeds from the bottom so I'm using it up in the right order. It's so easy.. Just load from the top and use from the bottom. I love this FIFO system because I know how many cans each row holds and I can see clearly at a glance if I need to buy more to fill it back up. Mine holds about 1000 cans.. Just shy of it.

I worked for s small mostly organic grocery store. When the date on meat is going out they freeze that meat and poultry and they sell it very cheap for dog food, my friend makes her own dog food.

I REMEMBER WATCHING A DOCTOR LAUGH ABOUT People working about eating Organic when they were being sprayed from above…chemicals. This is a real thing. The doctor had been an orthodontist and said he had about one day of training in Floridev, but then became a neurologist and had done extensive training in Floride and what it did to people.

Nonfat dry milk can be used as part of your home food storage or basic food supply. Each case contains twelve 27 oz. pouches and has an estimated shelf life of 20 years if stored in a cool, dry place.

Hi Mary, thank you for more great information. My mom and dad were in their late teens during the Great Depression they both grew up on farms and had to take on jobs to help their parents and families. They always taught us how bad things could get and taught us how to make do with what we had and farming, everything we ate was grown , raised or made on our farms other than sugar, flour, salt things we couldn’t grow , raise or make my dad raised sorghum every year and the old mule would go round and round grinding the stalks and dad would boil it until it was perfect nothing like fresh sorghum molasses on a hot buttered biscuit. Thank you for being so positive and not doom and gloom. Faith in God is where our hope comes from. May God bless and keep you and your family. Love in Christ

Great ideas, thank you, Mary! I cooked my Jasmine rice in chicken bone broth and it tasted so good! Really satisfying.
I wonder if a coffee mill would work for small batches of turning grains into flour?

Such helpful info! I run a Homesteading summer camp up at my family farm. This year, I am teaching the kids hydroponics, microgreens, sprouts in addition to working in our soil. Everyone needs to become a home gardener, regardless of whether they have land or not. We make meals and treats directly from the garden. The skills our grandparents took as second nature are almost nonexistent in households today.

You are wise and knowledgeable about foods and food storage. Speaking of parents, my parents grew up in the economic depression and WWII and often told of stories of how they survived and adapted. My mother used to eat a can of sardines with saltine crackers. I though that was so unappetizing. I tried it on day and found that it is not as bad as I thought. My father often would buy foods in bulk from the New Orleans French Market. He would buy a sack of potatoes or other produce and sometimes he would buy a sack of oysters and other seafood from the seafood market. I try to educate my children on how to do things or eat like I did when I was growing up. IT is difficult. They are spoiled on McDonald's, pizza hut and Popeyes fried chicken. When I cook a pot of cabbage with corn bread , mustard greens or New Orleans style red beans, I am the only one eating it. They are spoiled with quick, pre-cooked or instant meals or fast food. Many days, as a kid, we sat around the table and "shucked" fresh ears of corn or I would "shuck or clean" a sack of fresh oysters or clean, descale and gut fresh fish we caught or that my dad would bring home. I think if we had a SHTF event or economic depression that young people will be skilled quickly or they will suffer. Thank you for your channel.

I have been trying out some of the things that might be less expensive, have a longer shelf life, or are non perishable compared to the things I eat now. I do keto but know that may have to go in the future. I do plan to stay away from sugar and I don't think that will be a problem. My parents lived through the depression and she didn't want to waste anything. We had cottage cheese made out of sour milk ate beans and cornbread, and ate from the garden. I have stared using evporated milk in soup and my coffee instead of expensive cream. I may still may buy it sometimes but I know I don't have to have it. I have allot of coconut oil on hand. Check the dates on the olive oil. If you can find it that has the date processed on it not exp date.

I loved baked beans. Not really a fan of any of the other beans. My daughter makes a multi bean soup (7 – 12?) I didn't t eat it but when she used the immersion blender to make it a thick liquid I could eat it. It's not my favorite but I can eat it.
