I do a similar but even lazier version..use the lowest fat burger I can find.. toss the burger with the raw diced onion and spices.. then spread that out loosely in the pan.. don't compact it down.. top with veggies or not depending on if I feel like making a separate side veg.. then top with the mushroom soup and tots. Bake at 350F for 1 hour..this ensures that the beef and the onions get completely cooked and the tots get very nice and crunchy. Family request at least 3 times a month or more.

My grandma made something called Ground Beef Grand Style, meat, onions, one can of c o m soup, one can milk, one can of ketchup (!), one block of cream cheese. Fry beef and onions, add in everything else, (it is vital that the cream cheese is completely melted into the mixture before it hits the oven) bake about 10 mins THEN add a covering layer of refrigerated biscuits from a can. The little ones are easiest, the big ones have to be split in half and flipped over, I find. Bake until biscuits are done. I love it with a side of corn or peas. Does it count as a hot dish? Do I ever have leftovers? No, no I do not.

Oh the joy I felt when I saw this on my feed!! My mom would make this for us at least once a month growing up in MN in the 90s, almost this exact recipe. And it was always accompanied by “apple salad”, chopped apples mixed with whipped cream. It’s still a staple for my fiance and I when we need some good comfort food.

Even though I am a lifelong Minnesotan (so far) somehow the first time I had tater tot hot dish I was about 20 years old. I typically include onion, celery and cheese and also I mix in some tater tots in with the dish in addition to the top layer.
