A popular street food dish in Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore, Otak Otak is a grilled spiced fishcake encased in banana leaf …
You’ll need to soften the banana leaves first by warming them over a pot of boiling water or wafting them over your gas stove on an open flame. This makes them more pliable and easier to wrap so that the leaves won’t tear and leak the contents.
We use otak otak rempah paste with shrimp, squid and even fish roe — you should try it!
there are people selling this thing in my neighborhood, they have a lot of variations but since I didn't know what they put in them I'm afraid to try them. Now I know how to make it myself then I'll find a good opportunity to make some.
Cant have bananna at all or shrimp but was interesting to watch
looks great!!
Great stuff! 👍
Wow, this is a fantastic recipe!!! Would it be possible to steam them, or does the banana leaf charing give it a smoky aroma?
!!!!!!!! 🙂
Another great video
Although I am vegetarian, I like these shows. It is interesting to see how people all over the globe imagine food. Thanks!
Absolutely loooved this recipe! We also cook fish in banana leaf in Bengal but this one is completely different and looks awesome 🖤
I seen red, white version… now yellow.
Texture wise varies from heterogeneous small chunks to homogenous paste.
Green artisanal maybe viable using green mild/sweet flavored pepper/paprika/chili, lime leaf & pandan extract.
I've never heard of this but it looks fantastic
It's not Malaysia…Indonesia also have it, we called it Otak Otak too.
I’m honored that you followed my suggestion about Otak-Otak 🙂
Back in the days in Malaysia me and my family ate tons of those. Thank you for this recipe and video!
It looks yummy!
This looks like it's going to be AMAZING! Cant wait to try it!
