I'm sure if it were baked, the residual liquids would have cooked into the casserole. Or, if you drained the sausage on a paper towel.

Precooking anything takes away from the convenience of using a crockpot.
Looks great! But your 'wife?' Seems to be a bit bossy. I think she should just let you do your thing, and be grateful that she doesn't have to cook.
