I send my spent hens off to a better place as well. The stew kettle. Each hen yields about 3 pints of rich wonderful broth. The dogs get everything else that isn't bone.

Won't a Tom turkey act as a guard dog for the chickens and ducks?

Going about the same over there as here. The weather is changing …… I can tell cuz my back is angry. Our youngest daughter is stringing chicken wire everywhere to foil the hawks from above and the raccoons at ground level. We had a couple of two-footed critters roaming around last night. Our middle daughter heard them then the yard light triggered. LOL. They didn't stick around long. — I'm kinda looking forward to cozying down for a few months. Like you guys, we've put stuff by in case, as every winter forever, the power goes out. I'd like to see a good rain too. The trees are looking okay but I'm sure they could use a nice, deep drink. Thanks for the trip through the high tunnel. Every time you show it to us I perk right up. I'd never seen one before…at least not one nearly as nice. 🙂

If you have access to a young bear, less than two years old according to my Dad, who would be 119 years old if still alive. He lived to 94. He roasted a hind leg of a bear with dried pears! It was delicious. Best unique Thanksgiving ever. Plus all the fruit pies that he made. Mincemeat. Pumpkin. Cherry. Apple. And more. He loved to bake pies! Mom did all the rest. They were a good cooking team too. Peach. I knew that there was another pie.

Hugs to you all Ms. Lori and Mr. Brown. Y’all are genuine and a blessing to us who follow. We didn’t grow up to far away back here in Texas and all of your recipes, some memories and stories of the past is the same as me. It’s ok that some modern touches along the way are included in our daily life. Have a wonderful weekend and a fantastic Labor Day.

It's good to see and hear you manage all the trials and adventures that go along with homesteading. It sounds like a great way of life. Both of you enjoy your Labor Day holiday, stay safe, God Bless, and let's see you make that Mt. Dew Cake. I never heard of it, but sounds real good.

It is hard when you raise something from a baby and then they killed killed . I bought some chicks that where cuckoo Marans and ORust . They had started laying and Thank the Good Lord I hatched some chicks from the cuckoos but not the ORustshe hadn’t started laying yet . And yes you can hatch chicks from pullets that have just started laying .One day we had al our birds out and we where in the house taken a nape . Like you said everything was going good tell that afternoon. Well my roommates niece and her grandson came up and caught the little dogs in the act . Two dachshunds had murdered some of my babies. I grabbed my gun and went running . His niece was running after them and they came back up in front of the house . Well our path had a curve in it and there they were . I shot in between them not really trying to kill them but hoping them would learn to never come back . We lost four hens and one rooster. Ole the day before I’m guessing those same murders killed one of my ORust roosters so that left me with one . Well they killed him the next day .my roommate had turned the birds out that day not even thinking about the one the day before. Well my only cuckoo rooster we searched and searched and we found him . He was beat up pretty bad and so was two hens . Well he made it but the hens didn’t. Then we finally get the back yard closed in so this wouldn’t happen again . Then it rained like twice a week for a long time this spring and early summer . And I started losing some of my young chicks . I’m guessing it was respiratory problems and I’m still fighting it . Well my cuckoo rooster got it and the two hens and the two hen bared rocks . My rooster I named lucky because of him making it through the dog attack, but the second time of the respiratory took him out . Hens still ok. Lucky gave me two roosters and so far they are ok , I have lost a few of the hens chicks off him but I have three if they make it . Hope and Pray they live . They are the sweetest roosters I’ve ever had . Lucky would follow me and so does his sons . So I know how it is to loose some it hurts but we have to keep on going . And my ORust hen is ok so I buy two chicks . One was a rooster and one hen . Well the hen got it and pulled through but the rooster didn’t. So it must not be the breed I’m supposed to have .lol

Laurie I think you get a heck of a lot done within your long days. I don’t see how you do get so much done with full time job also. Thanks for sharing your days. From Chesapeake Beach Maryland.

Mrs. Lori, when I was young my mama would cut a pair of black or dark blue sweat pants ankle up to the knee and pull it over the big ol pickel jars to keep out the light. What do you think of this procedure for longevity?
