We have pork and beans in the US that have the tomato sauce but I don't know where we'd get your kind. i would like them better than the sweet Busch baked beans.

Barry.. it’s haricot beans. That’s what you use. My wife and I make homemade baked beans every week, using passata and chilli and bacon. Haricot beans are quite literally what Heinz use.

My grandmother always baked her beans. We had a bean pot that was hers until my mom broke it. But very good baked beans are actually baked! And have a nice brown sauce, not a tomato sauce!

If you want quirky cookbooks, the Destiny 2 and Final Fantasy XIV cookbooks are both amazing pieces of art, and full of recipes that are contextualized in the respective universes.

I watched that whole crunchwrap episode and was like, "Oh yeah that was a fun little episode." Then the end with the sad music, my mind went, "Oh no…" Then the graphic came up, "NOOO! NO!!!!"

Not even my dog and I shed a tear. So sorry to you and yours Barry. I remember what it's like as a kid to lose a pet so I feel especially bad for the girls.

Berry when you were here in the US you should've asked for vegetarian pork and beans. it's the closest thing we have to your baked beans. Sorry for your loss.

I'm really sorry about Amy. I didn't know. You have my sincere condolences.

Here in Quebec, we do have a baked bean that ressemble the Boston baked beans (we call them "bines" or "Fèves au lard"). It is sweetened with molasses and maple syrup, and has some oniona and mustard to give it just the tiniest bit of tanginess. I a-do-re it! It's great for brunch, and for the sugar shack season. My brother lives in England now, and when I went to visit him, I had some English baked beans with the tomato-y sauce. I quite like it, and did eat some beans on toast for breakfast at our hotel breakfast buffet in London. I did find a recipe online and made it once, but it was really sharp and not as nice. I sure will try this recipe and si if I like it better. 😀

PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL OF TOXINS! I'VE BEEN A VICTIM OF THESE NASTY BEASTIES!
Canellini beans are a white kidney bean. A lot of dried beans, especially kidney beans contain a nasty toxin, that can
ONLY BE REMOVED BY BOILING VIGOROUSLY for AT LEAST 10 MINUTES
(some say with the lid off, I don't know, but I'd rather take extra precautions). After that they can be simmered for the rest of the time, but they have to have that RAPID BOILING to reach a high enough temperature to get rid of the toxins, so DON'T EVER cook dried beans in a slow cooker unless they have had that rapid boiling first.
JUST SOAKING THEM DOES NOT GET RID OF THE TOXINS.
I have first hand experience of this kind of food piosoning. I cooked some dried kidney beans in a stew, but I didn't know about boiling it vigorously as it didn't say on the packet, so it just had a nice long simmer. The next 24 hours was the most unpleasant time, mostly spent either very close to the bathroom or in it! I have never felt so ill in 40 years! I couldn't eat and I could barely keep water down, it just went straight through me!

Although red kidney beans are by far the worst, it's always best to stay on the side of caution with ANY dried bean, it really isn't worth it, feeling so ill, and you definitely need at least one or two days off work, as you will not be straying far from the bathroom! Please be careful and make sure everyone knows about this!
(SORRY ABOUT ALL THE CAPS, BUT THIS IS SO IMPORTANT!!!!)
P.S. Canned beans don't have this problem.

Oh, Barry, thank you so much for sharing this! We live in the US and have been having a very hard time finding Heinz baked beans lately. I'm going to make a massive batch of this recipe and either can or freeze the extras. You are a life saver!

You could have at least bought the right beans lol. It would have even been listed on the Heinz can what beans they were. I should have known though if you're a Heinz beans fan, which are the worst branded beans.

I feel that it's worth mentioning that the soaking you do to dried beans at home isn't just to soften them, it's to remove toxic compounds like alkaloids and lectins which can be truly dangerous in the amounts found in some beans. You'll want to actually switch out the water to get rid of them, since cooking with heat can destroy the same compounds but isn't as effective as simply removing them with the water. Even 2-3 improperly soaked kidney beans that haven't been cooked enough can make an adult human really sick. If you find that beans make you really gassy, this might actually be because you are extra sensitive to alkaloids and extra soakings of dried beans can help. Most people who have only ever eaten beans from a can wouldn't typically know these things, but it is important, because some beans are very dangerous and even lethal when improperly prepared, like lupinis. a quick google can generally tell you how long each type of bean needs to be soaked, but I have noticed most dried bean packages make no mention of this.

Cost Plus World Market stores here in the States might be the cheapest option for Heinz Baked Beans for those of you who live on this side of the pond. As an American, I’ll stick to my Bush’s Baked Beans.

I always laugh when Brits put down American Baked beans. Its an American dish, one of the few actual American dishes. Tomato based baked beans are sacrilege. Not taking food advice from a country that has tomatoes, blood sausage, and beans for breakfast.. You need a real breakfast like Rocky Mountain Oysters.

This is pretty much the recipe that I use that I found on the internet except mine uses 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce and only 2 Tbs of brown sugar. I don't think that any Worcestershire sauce is required and my next batch will not have any. I only used 1 1/2 Tbs brown sugar and cannot believe you used 15 Tbs of sugar !! The main difference between commercial beans and my home made ones are mine are much tangier due to the Worcestershire sauce, but I would not add anymore sugar.
