As a kid I grew up on cream of wheat. It is my love. All the savory you want with it. All the side dishes. All the fruit. My older sister made us grits one time and put jelly in them to sweeten them because we were used to cream of wheat with milk, sugar and butter plus fruit, and I threw up at the table. Never ever ate them again. Oatmeal is okay in my book. Not my favorite but a pretty decent breakfast food.

I eat plenty of steel cut oatmeal, and understand the health benefits—but I love grits in an emotional way that has nothing to do with iron, and vitamins. It's one of those foods that transport you through memory. A little naughty, because it isn't the most nutritious food, but it's simply sensual pleasure for me–even just with salt, pepper and butter, even better with shrimp, etc.

There's protein in oatmeal. Cream o' wheat, is where you add sugar, NOT grits. I knew an Okie from Muskogee who put butter and sugar in his rice, and it was fantastic, but they were NOT creamy. Oatmeal with brown sugar, butter, and toast or saltines (savory and sweet Dulce). I would devour oatmeal or grits for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, if I intended to be on insulin for the rest of my life. As an aside, I adore you both.

Okay. Of course grits over oatmeal or cream of wheat.
SUGAR ON GRITS IS AN ABOMINATION!
I don't hate people who consume sugar grits; however,
they can't come near me without getting screened like TSA checkpoint.
