If I run short, I make what I call "what's in the cabinet." You get creative and put what you have into some kind of casserole or soup. Use spices to flavor it up or add some cheese. I have come up with some good recipes this way

St Patrick’s day is coming up so- cabbage is really cheap right now! Bought 3- heads today, will probably buy 3- more before the sale goes off. We love it used all kinds of ways.49 cents per #. I try to designate a shelf in the fridge for items needing to be used very soon, I find I waste much, much less this way.

Unfortunately in the UK poverty is at a level so bad that food banks are handing out parcels which require nothing more than a kettle to heat the food. The cost of living crisis, and cost of energy is awful. My Nan lived through rationing at the end, and for numerous years after the Second World War, and she thinks it’s worse now for families than it was back then. We live in one of the richest countries on earth, shameful.

I volunteer at a local soup kitchen. Its run by a local church and its not just for the homeless. Its for anyone who wants a little company… and its not just soup. On days im there we pick up fried chicken from a local restaurant, i make some side dish… usually pasta… and a local bakery donates baked goods. My church does soup on fridays during lent.
There are places to go for a free meal. Call every church in your area and they will point you in the right direction.

Great video, Hope!! You've provided much of this information before, but this "real world" process, from start to finish, including recipes, was so very useful. Thank you!!

People should not be scared of trying vegetarian meals. Start by having a veggie day one day per week. You will survive. I have not eaten any meat for over 30 years. Great savings can be achieved, if nothing else. Try it.

Hi Hope! I have made your lentil burgers, and I enjoyed them. I appreciate your video on that!! I would now like to make black bean burgers. Are black bean burgers richer in flavor than lentil burgers? We eat meat in my home, but I am trying different ways to cut down on expensive meats. Of course, my husband will not try them…maybe eventually!

Also, if you are truly struggling there is no shame in asking for help. I volunteer with our area food banks. There are resources out there for those in need. One of the churches in our food-bank network also operates a 24/7 open pantry where people can anonymously get food.

It's the end of Summer in Australia. At the moment late Summer produce like fresh tomatoes, lettuce, bananas, cucumbers, and stone fruit are all much cheaper. Peaches were $AU3 per kg today ($1.50 a pound). Carrots are ok but Winter veg like cabbage, pumpkin and spinach is more expensive at the moment as its out of season. Spinach was $4 for a small bunch!!! Lamb and chicken are both affordable at the moment. I'd suggest Carrie buys some Aldi sausages, which are about $5 for a tray of 8, two can be cooked, cut into pieces and added to beans or salads for the meat eater's family meal. Aldi is cheaper in Australia than Costco for many things. Many green grocery markets shut one or two days a week, go there the afternoon before they close and they're selling veg that won't last long very cheaply.
