A chance encounter, a happenstance, an impossible but fortunate sequence of events, call it what you will, I witnessed Nadia dance in the flesh. It was the most sensual and sobering experience of my entire life. She performed in Sikkim, foothills of the Himalayas, for a convivial gathering on an effervescent summer eve. The setting was a villa-like structure overlooking a soothing view of rolling hills and valleys, a river meandering in the distance. We were all very comfortably accommodated. As you can imagine, spectacular refreshments were served, arrayed in a capacious room, which adjoined an extensive patio. Some stood, others sat or reclined – all chatting amiably. The weather was perfect, the air heavenly. To be sure, members of several royal families were present, but at such gatherings there is never any distinction of class. Everyone is equal.
All at once it felt as if there was a charge of electricity in the room, as if everyone was somehow magnetized and drawn together. Just as suddenly Nadia appeared in our midst, smiling, as everyone turned their gaze to her. Although shorter than I envisioned, her presence was utterly alluring and commanding. The performance was about to begin.
