An incredible grocery store in Singapore city centre! We explore all the weird and wonderful food on the shelves in Raffles Place …
This is an upmarket supermarket that serves mostly expats. Most locals don't shop at this kind of place frequently. Singapore is an international city with people from all over the world so places like these are for them. Obviously most of the products come from thousands of miles away hence the price.
Singaporean here, marmite is quite common in our households growing up. Used to mix it in plain porridge or put it on buttered toast, and there’s dishes such as marmite chicken at what we call a “zi char” stall.
this is expensive place in sg, there are cheaper options in sg.
I studied there for a year in 2017 wonderful experience.
To : 👁goTMy👁oNu; English Youtube channels audiences might not be familiar with you but you are definitely ‘famous’ in Chinese Youtube channels. Your comments in Youtube are always so bloody sarcastic and hypocrite towards Singapore. Dude, don’t be a born loser, go get a life. LOL.
u went to the higher end supermarket. i never go there cos $$$$$.
That was probably one of the more upper end grocery store in Singapore.
Good selection although pricey, if course. I'll stick to Lidl. 😉
Don't be too impressed by Singapore. There is more to it than meets the eye.
Market Place is one of the most expensive supermarket that we have here in SIngapore.
There are many more supermarket chains that are cheaper, such as Fairprice and Sheng Shiong, away from the city centre. The downfall of course is that these neighbourhood supermarkets may not carry some of the imported brands. However, that too is starting to change, as chains like Fairprice has its own "Fairprice Finest" stores that carry so-called higher-end items, at a much cheaper price than Market Place. Alternatively, we have e-grocer like Redmart which also carries many imported brands suck as Sainsbury's and Wool (I believe from New Zealand) amongst many others imported brands.
Nonetheless, it is awesome to watch your videos and vlogs, taking in the sights and sounds of our tiny little island. Cheers!!
Singapore and Affordable don't go together in the same sentence Ho ho!
Cool to see you guys in Singapore, I was born there. I don’t feel Singaporean at all tho 😂 but I’ve visited enough to make watching this interesting
should make a video on how you know singapore before coming
So funny, I saw some American brands. In the spice section I saw McCormick, which has been in my state (Maryland) since the 1800’s. And the hams you were looking at were an American brand as well, Dietz and Watson. That was the nicest grocery store, so organized and aesthetically pleasing 😊.
Expat supermarket, expat prices!
That supermarket sells a lot of imported and premium products at premium price LOL. Supermarkets under Cold Storage brand or similar are considered high end. Locals typically shop around neighbourhood wet markets, shops at housing estates and supermarkets like NTUC or Finest (more premium arm), Sheng Shiong and Giant where prices are more reasonable and affordable.
On a side note, I love visiting supermarkets and also exploring supermarkets that I travel to as well, so interesting :D.
That supermarket is fancy fancy. Some of us grew up eating marmite with plain rice congee and we will call it a day…
Raffles Market Place items is not the cheapest. Locals go to supermarkets like NTUC FairPrice or Seng Siong or Giant which prices are lower than Raffles Market Place or Cold Storage.
Raffles City and its Market Place is very nice but very expensive place to go shopping. Almost like doing you're shopping at Harrods in London (well not quite). Singapore is expensive, but it is not that expensive.
BTW
Love the mood and ambience of your vlogs.
You just made grocery shopping in SG look very interesting haha. Then again, I've spent a few hours in grocery markets/supermarkets overseas before :D.
Oh, have you visited any wet markets? Things are even cheaper there, and the environment is veryyyy different! They are usually only open in the morning though!
Compared to the states these are half the price 🥸
There are options for the budget conscious if you know where to look. Same goes for residence, food, groceries and clothing. All the polls about Singapore being on a list of most expensive cities/countries to live in is based off an extravagant lifestyle, usually for an expatriate who is earning top dollar.
That seems really pricey, hope you can find better prices elsewhere? Do they have bakeries in Singapore? I love a good bakery. My late husband lived there in the late 60s, it looks incredibly sanitised and modern compared to the memories he shared with me. Hope you are both enjoying the adventure? X
There are many supermarket located in neighborhood which apparently selling more local brand stuff which are more cheaper. They even had more discount for senior people during off peak hours encouraging them to buy when not many people are in the store …😄
I love watching your videos…. But I can't bear to watch this video any more. When I see the prices…I get sad and very upsetting about the inflated cost of living in SG… I JUST MAKE ME WANT TO 😭
Prices are so sad…..
Come back 2 years later… Prices will be even more worst…. With the GST hike.
Gosh, I wondered how Singaporeans survive!!!
City center Supermarket are so expensive…. But even the heat land supermarket aren't cheap too. Saw an article about $70++ for Organic chicken…in HEARTLAND NTUC… CRAZY!!!!
Well… What can we expect. SG high inflation, high price and high GST…. Even the hawker foods are begging unaffordable soon😔
butter very high, other stuff as well ….
Very pricy I’d have to say, but all imported so it makes sense.
Matt and Julia + Raffles City Market Place brought us around the world. Haha! What a range of selection! And i really enjoyed the video
Yorkshire Tea crew checking in! 😍I loved this video, thank you. It could've been an hour and I would have watched every minute. Wandering around grocery stores might be my favourite part of travelling!
Singapore supermarket is called Fairprice, Sing seong, cold storage
Most goods except for things like liquor, tobacco, etc) already enter Singapore tariff-free.
A pound is roughly 454 grams !
