Oh my! Love your version! Used hazelnuts one time and it still turned out beautifully. My (European) mom made this and she spread homemade pineapple preserves on the cake before the frosting. Also very good. Everyone puts their spin on it. You can't go wrong. Mother's day is coming up soon!
