I remember these and the egg custards. I would always just have an apple instead. They tasted the same to me. But, everyone else liked them. We didn't have air-conditioning. So, pies, cookies and fruit was dessert at the end of the meals. Lord knows, I adored winter. Cakes, cakes, and more cakes , plus puddings too.

I’m going to make this for evening with friends tomorrow. Hopefully you’ll see this question, if not, doing it anyway. How much lemon would you put in it if you did? Also I love how you poured your pie filling into the crust while on the oven rack. What an idea. Thanks.

Oh my golly, Wolly! You have the same recipe that I use! Yup! You can't beat the NUTMEG!! Except I can never get whole buttermilk. They only sell low-fat buttermilk at HEB AND Walmart (SA, Tx). I've looked everywhere for whole buttermilk – can never find it : (

Do you have a recipe for a Southern white potato pie? My husband has wanted one of these forever and I never ever heard of it but his deceased grandmother used to make it for him as a child and nobody had the recipe! If you have it please please please let me know!!!!

I never want to make a buttermilk pie again. About 20 years ago I got ready to sell my home and a neighbor who was an x real estate person said he would sell my house for me at no charge if I would make him a buttermilk pie every day until it was sold. Well we each kept our bargain and I made over 30 buttermilk pies one each day until the house sold. My house sold at a record price and my neighbor ate a LOT of pie.

I make buttermilk pies quite often. My wife, kids, and granddaughter love them. I also sell them at the local farmer's market. It doesn't matter how many I bake, they all sell fast. People around East Texas love them.
