Great choice on butter beans.
I've only had this dish once. It was on the sweet side, but very good. I used the leftovers on some Hebrew national hot dogs and it was out of this world

I love baked beans, made from scratch with just some bacon on top for meat. Beans, great northern or other white bean, catsup, some onion, brown sugar and baked. No recipe, just when if feels like it will be yummy.
Like meatloaf I love to see the different versions of calico beans. I start mine off with bacon, then saute my onions and peppers in the bacon fat. I use pork and beans and a variety of other beans and simply add brown sugar and mustard powder. I then bake them in the oven very often with a ring of kielbasa. But they are great with baked ham or ribs. Your recipe looks very flavorful and the crock pot of course is perfect. Thanks for sharing. I'm trying yours next time.
