My family’s Cole Slaw dressing recipe is quite a bite different than this one and is definitely not near as sweet. Since we grow cabbages in our garden and for whatever reason we often don’t grow into the ultra tight heads like you get at the grocery store we always cut the cabbage head in half and separate all the leaves and then give them a couple of good rinses in ice water followed by a trip into a salad spinner and then laid on a large towel for an additional pat dry. The cabbage leaves are then stacked and any excessively thick parts of the leaves are trimmed and discarded. The stacked cabbage leaves are then sliced very thinly (shreds) and the shreds are cut in 1&1/2 to 2 inch long pieces. Carrots are washed peeled and then cut to the same size as the cabbage. The dressing is equal parts of a good quality mayonnaise, full fat sour cream, a tablespoon of buttermilk, one or two teaspoons of sugar, a teaspoon of mustard powder, cider vinegar, salt, white pepper, and celery seeds to taste. The cabbage and carrot mix is dressed and allowed to sit for a few minutes and then tasted and adjusted for seasoning. One final note dress the Cole slaw lightly and save the dressing left over to add a tablespoon or two just before serving. If you are wondering why we use white pepper instead of black pepper it is a because the white pepper a more rounded flavor that does not enhance the bitterness of cabbage that many people try and hide with large amounts of sugar and is why we trim the excessively thick parts of the cabbage leaves and either put them on the compost pile or feed them to or rabbits and chickens. PS whenever possible make your coleslaw a day before you intend to serve it to allow all the ingredients to get to know each other and sing a happy song to your tastebuds.

I don't know about this version, but I've found that milk in coleslaw tends to create servings of slaw that sit in puddles of liquid. [THE LOW-DRONING MUSIC IS DISTRACTING]
