For Filipinos in the PH, it depends on the type of rice, if it's "NFA" rice, you wash it sooooo many times hehehe. But mostly, it depends on how you like your rice, do you like it sticky or "buhaghag".

We would only wash rice more than 2 times if there are still bits of dirt floating. Local milled rice sometimes are brownish in color, thus we wash it at least 3. But for 'high quality' milled rice, it only takes 2. But water doesn't have to be 'clear' before we start cooking. My mom told me too much washing would lose the taste or aroma of the rice.

As for the method or washing, I think both style is ok.

Those methods technically affects how the rice ends up. But to be honest, it depends on how clean the rice is and whether you want a more fluffy rice and whether you intend to cook it as a congee later…

If you are not sure of the cleanliness of the rice , it's better to clean them until their clear but you may need to add more starch if you decided to use it for congee…

You both were doing it right and wrong at the same time. You are correct for just gently swirling it so the grains don’t break. And Doug is correct for washing it until the water is clear to get rid of excess starch. Perhaps your future child would get it perfectly right.

my filipino parents did it twice before but then there's still that starchy smell. so we do it until the water is kinda clear.. but srsly it depends on how lazy we are 😆

For me (as a FIlipino too), it depends on the quality of rice, the grain type, and the cleanliness of the grains. if i get rice from the bigasan (for non-Filipino people, that means a rice vendor in our languages) at a standard street market area, i wash it out 5-6 times the same way Doug does it, you can never wash it enough lol. if i buy decent quality rice from the supermarket (zip sealed), i only need to wash it 3 times at most and swirl it a bit less vigorously. if i want the grains more sticky (for our daily meals as in rice + ulam) with commonly found types of rice here like sinandomeng or denorado, i do the above. For malagkit (glutinous rice) like in making biko or paella; as well as japonica grains, i only wash it 2-3 times.
