I never knew that you can make homemade Hard Tack. Send me boat load of fish and brews out to Regina.
Bonita, where I live, we do not get these ready made packaged gluten free flours. Can you share the contents of the flour so I can get them from the store?
OH MY!!!! You made my xmas Bonita!!! I can have my fish and brewis with some drawin butter tomorrow night for xmas eve.
Thanks so much for figuring out how to make this.
I called purity and asked them a few years ago about making a GF hard tack and they said there wasn't enough interest in it but maybe in the future….. well purity… ya snooze ya loose!!! lol
Thanks for this video. I enjoy learning about what people in other areas consider a 'tradition' food wise – especially for the holidays. I live in the Pacific Northwest, US, and did grow up with some salted cod (Norwegian) prepared in cod fish cakes but had never heard of this combo till now. I hardly ever see the boxes of the salted cod now days. Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Excellent video. Could you do a vid on canned corn beef and cabbage Newfoundland style?
I live in Maine. I would have thought that our cooking would have been more similar. It really isn’t, but it is similar to some of my grandmothers recipes she showed me years ago. She lived on the shore, and was from a poor family. She was born in 1895. They made the best of what they had and did it taste good! She is the only person I ever saw make scrunchins, but I don’t think she called them that. She ate salt cod a lot, too. I can’t wait to try this!
I Wish i could reach through the screen, you got me craving for a feed hahaha, i really enjoy watching your videos sitting here eating old made chicken soup, but i would trade it for yours, again merry christmas and a very happy new year to you and your family.
Hi Bonita, I've never heard of "hard bread" or "scrunchins" before. This is so unique and looks yummy. I've got to give it a try. Thanks for sharing this recipe with us. Merry Christmas!
I have often wondered how to use hard tack. Thanks for the great recipe an explanation.
Gluten free? Gimme all the gluten you can spare.
is the salted cod still pretty salty
awesome looks pretty good
I've read books that mentioned hardtack all my life and never knew what it was. Thank you, Bonita, and Merry Christmas to you and your family!
What a wonderful winter meal for us in Rhode Island, USA. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Great meal, my grandma used to make it for our whole family. Thanks
Hi Miss Bonita! My daughter has to have gluten free food, or she gets very ill. Thank you so much for this recipe. I'll give it a try, for sure.
I don't have a use for this but I find it interesting and I send you my love and support your beautiful Merry Christmas💜🎉🇺🇸⛄😽
That was amazing Bonita, a real Seafarers dinner! 🐟🍞🥔
Bonita – I am curious. In the Maritime provinces do you ever see brewis served in restaurants? In New England I knew a few people who made it at home, but never saw it in restaurants there. It is largely unknown. Thanks for the video!
I found this so interesting. I had no idea people still ate hardtack! Everytime I've read about hardtack it has been in a historical aspect or as a prep for long term storage and made in large batches. Now I'm going to have rethink about how I can use hardtack. Great video 👍👍
This episode must have a thumbs – up if only for the word "scrunchins"! 👍😂
Fish n' Brewis is my ultimate favorite dish and we can't get the hard tack here in US. Thank you!!
