Hi Jamie. Love your videos! We also make a meal out of the leftover ham bone. (Sometimes my fam is more excited about the frugal leftover meal than eating ham lol.) Anyway, here in Texas, borracho beans is a fave side. It basically translates to drunken beans because there is beer in it. 🙂 My cheat is using a big jar of picante chunky salsa…instead of chopping up the individual veggies.
So with the beans & ham bone…I add a can of (cheap) beer & jar of chunky salsa…That’s it. If I have some cilantro, I’ll add it.
We eat this over white rice. It is soupy…but so good soaked up by the rice! 🙂 It is so flavorful and really delicious …and cheap 🙂

Beans are a staple in my Cajun kitchen. I really like to cook white beans (navy) with left over pork roast bone. Lots of onion, garlic and bell pepper go into that dish too and it is so comforting on a rainy or cold day. Really thankful for your videos, you are a good teacher!

Thanks for the reminder of ham and beans. I have never tried it with pinto beans, we have always used great northern. I always put some carrot and celery besides the onion and then top with raw onions when serving.
After living in China for several years, this was one of the meals I requested when I returned. One of the most comforting and homey feeling meals for me.
Have a safe and enjoyable Labor Day weekend!

A good hearty meal Jaime! 🤩 Carrots would be a nice side.
I love cooking butter beans with ham or a ham bone! 😋
But we often use a relish on our dried beans. It's kind of like a chow-chow, the same basic ingredients.
You said the dish often comes out salty when using ham. Did you know that you can add a potato to the dish and the potato will absorb the salt! Yep, it works every time! ☺️
Our family would cook big pots of beans. And our mom always added extra things to a dish to make it go further.
We had a lot of meals of sausage and sauerkraut. And our mom always added potatoes, which we always thought was a treat. Some day we learned it was a filler but by the time we were grown we actually preferred this dish with all 3 ingredients. The potatoes actually reduced the tartness of the sauerkraut.
Especially as adults, we learned just how much our mom added extra items to a dish to make it go further. And it also taught us to be more frugal cooks.
My mom never used cornbread mix. It wasn't even a thing back then. 😉 In fact, I was the official cornbread maker when I was growing up. Probably from age 10 I started making cornbread. I started with a recipe and measuring cups and before I knew it I was going freehanded. 🤗
But nowadays I use a cornbread mix. I don't buy a bag of cornmeal because I don't make cornbread that often.
But so many meals consisted of cornbread when I was growing up. Especially with dried beans.
And with the increase in food prices and how much worse it's going to get, we really need to eat more wisely. And these are some great lessons you're teaching us! 😘
We need to continue to stock up on canned goods. The same goes for dry goods. Stock up on as many staples as you can because it's going to get a lot worse. Add extra vegetables to dishes when you can. What we do now will make a huge difference in the coming year.
Thanks for sharing another great video! 🥰
    Now I wish I had a ham bone. 😚
