You should have something similar there, we have cup-a-soup satchels here, I'd just use one of them and add to it, they are a just add water deal as well for those quick snack or meals if you add things to them and it's pretty much fool proof, on the packet they tell you how much water to add and how long to cook for in microwave and on a stove…save mucking around trying to get everything perfect from scratch like you just did, but hey I get it, it's all about the cooking experience in the great outdoors….

Very interesting idea. Certainly an excellent break from the standard trail fare. The grilled cheese adds some much needed calories for the trail.

I carry Ritz crackers often. They are surprisingly durable; much less breakage than saltines; better flavor than almost any other cracker (to me); and not as hard as pita chips. I think crushing the Ritz crackers might help you get the thickness/consistency you want better than the pita chips. They might also provide a little more buttery flavor. Ritz also has some flavored crackers similar to pita chips that are excellent.

A recipe I have used often is trail pizza. I carry a small MSR skillet that a small tortilla fits perfectly. I put a small tortilla in the skillet, then layer on string/shredded cheese, pizza/marinara/spaghetti sauce in packets; and finally pepperoni slices. Heat the tortilla very slowly until the cheese melts. Voila! Trail pizza. My hiking friends love it. It takes a stove with excellent flame control and takes a while to do several pizzas if you have a big appetite, but they are worth the effort in my opinion.

You may have already done a similar recipe. I am fairly new to your channel. Saw you first on another backpacking channel. Thank you for your excellent alternatives to the standard trail fare.

I can’t have the pita chips, but think a swap of Mexican seasoning and dried bell peppers for the Old Bay. Also more milk powder because tomato soup should be creamy, maybe a touch of butter/butter powder?
Thanks for sharing, it’s been on my to do list for a few years.

I think not naming this "Trailmato Soup" is a missed opportunity. Also, tomato powder isn't that hard to find, but is usually a bit pricey. If you have a dehydrator and a spice grinder (or mortar and pestle), you can make your own out of tomato paste. Heck, you could also just dehydrate some condensed tomato soup, but then you're stuck with all those preservatives and what not.
