I can mind when my Grannie used to make stovies when the Winter was in. They were brilliant. Also on Sunday mornings we used to have Stew, Mince, Carrots, Onions and Butter Beans, cooked in a big pot, for Breakfast, with a piece n dook (a slice of bread dipped in the gravy). Aye. The good old days. Ye cannae whack it.

Stovies originate from the East coast, a real Tuechter meal made by agricultural workers and incorporating left overs from a joint of mutton, gifted to the workerst from the landowner. Stovies originally contained Mutton (possibly beef) ,dripping from the roasted joint, potato's and onion. And nothing else.

Well you have solved my problem with slow cookers, you don't have to cover the contents with liquid! My stews would always have a ton of gravy. There was me filling the pot to the brim before setting it off in the morning. Taste great but far too sloppy. Thanks. Also I'm going to have keep an eye out for beef links, I'm down in Cornwall and they are not something I have come across.

I grew up on the Firth of Clyde and when my Mum would make stovies it was always with slice and she would put dough buoys in it. I’ve not had them in a very long time as I became a vegetarian back in the late 80’s but I’m figuring out the best vegetarian mince to make my own slice with, so that I can 🙂

Hi lovely Cheryl. Inspired by you I just bought a slow cooker, and made this recipe as ‘the virgin” meal’ 😀 And it was soooooo lovely and my hubby was very happy and changed his mind about ‘the slow cooker being just another kitchen pot’ 🤩 Only downside for me is that the sausages I can get here are nowhere nearly as nice as the ones you can get in the UK 😒 so I’m actually thinking of making my own links next time – because this will surely be made again 💕

All those variations even just within your own family prove one thing: there is never one absolutely correct authentic recipe for any of these traditional dishes. People used what there was and if it tastes good, what can be wrong?

I have the exact same slow cooker you're using but every time I try to make this, after 8 hours on low the potatoes (Maris Pipers as recommended) and carrots are still almost raw , what am I doing wrong?
