This is an age old process of cooking rice in South India in all homes, till the concept of Pressure Cooker came in. However even now mass cooking for functions are done this way only. However I would be avoiding drinking the kanji water because of the starch in it which is the main purpose of cleaning the rice in the first place. It is usually given to young kids with added sugar as a supplement of their early diet especially those with limited supply of milk.
well washing and draining water that has a lot of nutritional value is surely not healthy. Then you eat only refined starchy rice. You can cut down the portion rather than drain the water unless you are going to drink it. excess rice can be soaked overnight and drink the fermented water that it more healthy too

It's good to wash it so many times and then when cook throw the water to be safe …rice has arsenic which is bad for our health.
Seems like this practice was done for many years but how come there’s still lots of people who has diabetes n wt rounded belly. Proportion is the key.

In my country we usually add double the water and after cooking for a while, let all water to be absorbed. No draining needed.
This method is good. But never cook anything in Aluminium vessel. Use brass or bronze. You can even avoid stainless steel also. Earthenware is excellent if you can handle and maintain it well.
Nowadays you will not get Kanji starch is already removed by Rice mills while polishing

In our house my granny used to use the kanji water with curd to wash hair..sour card especially as in those days she there was no fridge.
