Strange to relate, I don't have ANY problem getting my ketones up. My problem is usually getting my BG DOWN! as an example. Last meal yesterday was around 5 PM (some beef brisket and a black coffee). First meal today was around 2 PM ( I had a black coffee at ~8 AM). Took my BG and ketones before the meal. BG: 7.2 mmol/L (130 mg/dL); ketones 1.9 mmol/L ! So even tho my BG is high (PARTICULARLY for a 21 hr fast), obviously my insulin is fairly low, or my ketone production would have been inhibited. I had 11 oz of my BBB&E special (ground beef, bacon & fried egg hash with butter) for lunch, then took my BG and ketones 2 hrs later. BG 5.9 (106), ketones 1.1 (I take NO meds at all).

Love following your challenges! Good info and analysis 🙂 Was wondering about mixing it up… Good idea! Crazy how different we all are re: ketones, glucose, etc.

Thank goodness we have brave content creators like you in the keto community willing to experiment and show us new ways to maybe get our ketones up because I struggle the same as you with iron etc and incorporating sardines in my diet is really helping me…

I'm impressed, you've really thought this through. I made it only 48 hours on sardine fast, and am now a day into a good old fashioned Dr Atkins type fat fast. I plan on doing this for at least two more days, but it really takes work to plan it properly. I'm looking forward to following your next little dietary task.

I think when we call it a “challenge”, some folks hear a competitive spin to it. Like only the really tough or dedicated can “handle the challenge”. This puts a value judgement in the mix. I like “protocol” or “experiment” because that is really more of your motivation. It is about your personal well-being, not your character or fortitude.

I completely agree with you! I've tracked my ketones for several years and always had high morning BS numbers and lowered ketone numbers aways. I tried the sardine challenge and my BS and ketones improved – night and day! And the improvements have continued since. I will be doing the sardine challenge monthly and have added in sardines to my regular eating (I happen to love sardines 😉). I also noticed that even one day of a sardine challenge improves my numbers.

hello Nili, Peter Attia(MD and long-term self-experimenter with ketosis and exercise) gave this talk and entitled it …
    "My n=1 experiment and journey."
Hope this title inspires you in your search for a different word than…. challenge. I loved this video of yours.

Your exercise routine will help keep ketones high. I found that when I was younger and walking 5 miles a day I had ketones up the waazoo even eating more carbs. And yes they do matter to feel your best..at least for me. I bet 80/20 now will work better because of your more intense work-outs. I love Keto chow BUT I am not a sweet girl so I would miss the savory. So now your challenge is to do two keto chows and a savory meal..along with your killer workout.

When I started Keto, my ketones were pretty consistently around 1.3-1.5. That was with the same level of carbs I still eat on a normal day. At about 6 months in, they started dropping and now I need to fast or have what I refer to as a “half” day. This is when I eat only half of my calories and carbs for each of two meals. The third meal I skip completely. I either have a 3-day fast or 3 half days every 3 weeks. (Easy to remember 😊)
I’ve continued to lose weight, though slower, my thinking becomes clearer and my ketones go up over 1.0 by the end of day 2. In fact, they are usually around 0.7 by the end of day 1. So far, I am satisfied with this. My aim is to get rid of the remaining belly fat, add muscle (important as I am 75) and improve my odds at dying at an older age than my longest lived aunt (102)- and without brain deterioration. 😊

I personally don't do any challenges. That includes fitness ones as well as food challenges. I think back on all the things I tried in my teenage and in my twenties. Cabbage Soup Diet, 1000 calorie diet, Bananna diet, and so on. Everyone is different though so you need to know yourself.

The Challenges I watched were only 3 days long. You clearly communicated why you were doing it and were data based in your approach. That seems rational although I know the perception of rational is subjective for each person. Rational or not, I am in favor of "I do me. You do you."

Okay, the only sort of goal I heard was getting rid of brain fog. If the only goal for all of these challenges is getting rid of brain fog, then I’m guessing you are just looking for options to support that goal. It would make things simple since wether you test or not you would experience the benefit you are looking for.

This was a good analysis of what you have found in your search for a more brain friendly ketone level. You asked yourself the questions and then tried to find the answers. I definitely wouldn't call this a challenge, it is more of a question of are ketones at higher levels better for brain function. A lot of people have hopped on the challenges hoping to break weight loss stalls or to drop weight quickly. So the challenges get a bad reputation when the impossible doesn't happen, even though that was not their purpose. BBBE was created as an elimination time where you only ate beef (ruminant animals, bacon, butter and eggs) to see if what you had been eating was creating inflammation. Afterwards, one is supped to slowly add back in food they were eating slowly and one thing at a time to see what happened. That challenge took off like a rocket and now one hears about BBBE everywhere for every kind of fix. Each of us has to do the work you are doing to ask ourselves questions about what is happening with our body and our lifestyle and how to improve what we have. You Tube videos can give you ideas, but you still have to put in the work to get the results you want.

I completely agree about ketone levels. With a history of lifelong autoimmune disease my symptoms are significantly reduced when my ketones are higher. Even despite the fact that its difficult to achieve.

Interesting stuff on ketones. Good to know it made a difference for a long-time keto person to get them higher. Have you tried exogenous ketones? I wonder if that would help the brain fog? Also wonder if higher ketones in general would help other types of brain fog, like from Covid.

This is all very interesting analysis. I personally find it useful in my own journey. Maybe calling it a ‘ketosis reset’ for those who are somehow triggered by the word ‘challenge’…lol
