We had a good gallon bag of peaches leftover from the last round of Rachel's canning. We've seen a few other people freeze dry theirs, so we wanted to give it a try. The quality of the peaching heading in weren't the best quality, but they dried fine perfectly fine. We'll also discuss some of things we struggle with when it comes to freeze drying your own food, and share some tips we've learned along the way. ♥

Powder for a peach tea..
The freeze dried fruits are great in hot oatmeal! I’ve also used in pancakes. When the weather gets colder I’ll try in breads. I use freeze dried foods daily. Thrive Life has a long shelf life and once open will last months to a year in a sealed container. Mushrooms! Hubby doesn’t like so I use freeze dried. Saves me money in the long run
There are textural differences in freezing, canning, fermenting, dehydrating, and freeze drying fruits and vegetables. None of them are as good as fresh in my opinion but at least I will have food to eat if I find myself unable to grow or purchase food.
I would love to have a freeze dryer.
Try freeze drying some of your salsa. We love it as a powder. You can sprinkle it on things and it’s great added to cheese dip or to make a dip by adding it to sour cream.
We did Cisco rotisserie chicken and once rehydrated it tasted just like before we put it in….it was great.
Just had a thought of reconstituting with bourbon… You can also add the peach powder to a cocktail.
Way to go guys!😀🏆 You should try freeze drying your herbs, Rach! Dill is incredible! I have to buy mine at Wal-Mart, but it's amazing! Also, Stivers Homestead says freeze dried zucchini "comes back". I'd like to hear your opinion, guys. Love you tons!! 🤗😗💞
Love the honesty, so many homesteading videos all about freeze-dried foods and it is not something I wish to purchase am happy with dehydrator. Find I just click off a video now as soon as the harvest right is mentioned.
Apart from the big initial cost of a freeze dryer, the running costs must be high as they seem to take days for fairly small amounts compared to canning.
I wish I had a freeze dryer, but their so expensive. Hopefully the price will go down. I hydrated zucchini and powdered it the hard way. My tomatoe sauce was thickened with the powder. I powdered all kinds of vegetables that when in my sauce. My peaches I used in oatmeal and made oatmeal bars. I stuck them in my freezer for on the go snacks. Or when the grandkids come over. I put pecans on top with brown sugar. Yummy!
Freeze dried fruits have a very intense flavor. It’s delicious. And to be able to have that fruit or food, in general, at any time and not have to worry about it going bad is a blessing.
We have done all kinds of fruits, vegetables, meats, pastas, rices, whole meals, etc.
And the idea of Mylar bags is for long term storage soooo it’s not bad to “forget” about them.
We keep some things in the pantry in mason jars as well.
But the majority of the foods we do is for prep.
Also, in my experience one 300cc o2 absorber is sufficient for mason jars. but I’m in the south so maybe the altitude makes a difference. 🤷🏽♀️
Have you tried cooking with reconstituted fruit, maybe pies or crisps?
We freeze dried some peaches and we just like to snack on them. So good!
😊Thank you for sharing. I have purchased some freeze dried items and while being ok as a snack. (The raspberries were off the chart tart) but yes the texture to rehydrate I am not a fan of either
You haven't tried freeze drying eggs yet? That is the #1 thing I would get a freeze dryer for. I need eggs every morning, can't have carbs, and they can't be stored shelf stable any other way (if you don't have chickens and water glass).
You should try peach ice cream. It's one of my favorite things with fresh picked peaches!!
I think they would be good in baked oatmeal.
I did the same thing with my peaches, canned slices and made salsa. I also dehydrated some because my freeze dryer was shipped back for maintenance. The dehydrated ones where delicious. I will freeze dry some when it comes back.
