I’m not from PR. But I had a neighbor that I would help make the Pasteles every year and when I moved, I lost touch with her and it’s been years and it just dawned on me this year. YouTube will teach me how to make the Pasteles so this year I’m doing it on my own. I like the idea of the frozen masa. Can’t wait to try it! Thank you ❤

Don't use the masa para pasteles marca de El Sombrador. That was a huge mistake. I made my own masa. Those were delicious. Then, I had half the meat mix left, so I tried this recipe with prepared masa. It is sour tasting! It ruined the 2nd bath of pasteles. Why? The absorbic acidic acid used to preserve freshness by manifacturer ruined the recipe. It is the only brand that makes that mix. I did used the Goya brand guineo with it and it didn't have the acid. Definitely stay away from thia imgredient The sour lemon taste in pastel masa ia a huge turnoff.

100 percent PR here. You know people gonna have opinions. I wouldn’t use that masa and I would use a homemade sofrito for the meat. Also never in my family has anyone eaten pasteles with ketchup. We only eat it with pique.

I am Puerto Rican by marriage😁👊🇵🇷🇺🇲 my mother-in-law lived in NY and we live in Carolina so didnt get to spend as much time with her as i would have liked, she was The Absolute Best loved her so much. Through the years she was able to teach me to make the dishes my husband liked the most,, how to make a cafe bustelo with the sock….😂iykyk, how to make fresh sofrito, and lots of other things i didnt know before her. I remember the first time i visited, she cooked a separate meal for me of fried chicked, corn, rice and something else and while i thanks her and felt really special that she had done that knowing id never been out of my small town much less puerto rico😂. I was like "No I wanna eat what yall are eating" ready to try anything on my first visit to the big city right😊 she always liked me but i think that night was when she decided i was definitely a keeper🥰. The one dish i drew the line with was this one😭😭i just couldn't get past how it looked and it was years before my husband finally convinced me to try and OMG🤤soooo good I was like DAMNIT I BEEN MISSING OUT!🤣 unfortunately she was never able to teach me her from scratch recipe🫤. Let me tell you, they've been a rare treat ever since she passed in 07. But TODAY i am giving this a go for the first time ever. My sister in law turned me onto the bagged massa and hooked me up with all the stuff i was just checking back on how to mix it up. Im so excited. I hope they turn out good, mimaw would be so proud.🙏🥰

Thank Goodness for this video, growing up I always helped my mom make them. I’m 60 yrs young 😜and never attempted to make them till I saw your video. I went to our local Spanish store and bought everything I needed included the frozen masa. I am vegan so I don’t eat meat (not by choice but health issues) so I used plant based beyond meat, I cooked two yesterday as I was in the process of making them and they were delicious 🤤
Btw, this is a 2 people job, took me two days to finish them. THANK YOU, wish I could include pictures, I had an assembly line on the table 😂

I'm having a tough time finding the frozen green bananna dough and the alcupurrias dough. Can anyone direct me to maybe another name it goes by or a specific company that makes it? You'd think living in Brooklyn it'd be easy to find but apparently not lol! Tks!
