Closing Wild Horse Raceway, an NHRA sanctioned track for a fucking overpass wow, and last week's event was a sold-out show along with Gainesville Raceway. Gainesville Raceway will never fall victim to this BS.
My home track Palm Beach International Raceway West Palm Beach FL closing after 60 years to a company planning to erect warehouses what a disgrace to the largest sanctioned Motorsports organization in the world, the NHRA

Places come and places go but when the places were a place, memories happened and lives were changed because of it.. only thing is you just cant let the end of the place be the end of what the place stood for.. keep it fast and keep it safe so our kids kids can be able to get those same chills we get when we get pressed back in that seat with a smile ear to ear..

I wonder if the facility generated enough profit for the owners, and has anyone heard of plans to rebuild elsewhere in AZ? If not, the fact that the State of AZ wanted the land to build on may have been a blessing for the owners. Better to get something then have trouble selling and get nothing.
No matter what, it's a sad day for drag racing fans.

I can remember when the Fremont raceway in Fremont, Ca. changed to Baylands raceway. Going out for test and tune nights and run what you brung nights. Than the developers felt it was more useful for shopping, plus housing was encroaching on the raceway, so it went away. And people wonder why there’s so much street racing.

My uncle and I watched the most perfect top fuel pass many years ago. I can't remember who was the driver but I remember the pass it was during qualifying. Car left and half way down the track you could see a lite haze of tire smoke coming off the slicks and the front tires were just touching the track IIRC it was a new track record at 330+ MPH. Like the track my Uncle has passed away, as has my mom. We used to drive over from NM and make a weekend of it she and my aunt would go do their thing while he and i would go to the flea market, gun show… one time we even sat half the night watching a 100 lap dirt track race. I guess all things must end I haven't kept up with drag racing in a while. I know they closed English Town, they have been trying to close Bandimere, if they succeed the closest race will be Dallas.

Oh Clay, you talking about the overpass confirmed it (I thought maybe it was just another play due to the end of the lease again, which they have done a few times in the history of that track), I started racing at O.C.I.R. in O.C., Irvine, CA in the mid 70's and when they closed that track in mid 80's the operator took over that track, and I later moved from San Clemente, CA to Northwest AZ (and raced my last race in my Stock Elim. Car there in 1994, 95, 96, and finally 1997 at the Atsco Nats….Class Finalist. Took 26 yrs. Off to raise a family. Just missed the last event there, luckily The Strip at L.V., NV is closer, but will miss the old Firebird Raceway/Wild Horse Pass now for sure since it is going away due to urban expansion. All the tracks I have won class and bigger races at are officially gone, Atlanta, Houston, Englishtown, Chandler, just glad Famoso is still there as I won my First Div. Title there in 84'. Still do not know if the Old Moroso M.S.P. in West Palm Beach, FL is still going to survive or not.

At least The Strip in Las Vegas is not going anywhere in the short term. Lots of memories, and after a 26 yr. Layoff getting back after it in a much older age, the Stocker short block is done and being picked up today, see you out there soon brother…go step on that loud pedal.

Looks like I will be visiting Div. 6 tracks this year, where I have held a title but never actually raced, in the Pacific Northwest first. (1984 they combined Div 6/7 together, I still do not know why all these years later), and won my first Firestone/Centerline Div. 6 Wally (Div. Finals were held in Bakersfield at Famoso), and heading back there in October 2023.

America needs to support NHRA Dragstrips!

When they built this place it was in the middle of nowhere. They had the drag strip, and the lake for racing boats, a road course, and a dirt stock car track that I raced on until they close it right in the middle of the season. But now they keep building more freeways because of all the people that are moving to the Phoenix area. The laughs going to be on all of them when the water runs out in the next decade.

What a shame. Attending an AHRMA race at Firebird is what led to us moving to AZ years ago. First Beeline Dragway, then our local track, Speedworld, now WHP. All for more over-development we don't need.

ADOT has said they have no knowledge of an over pass being built in the area. They have no plans to do anything in that area. It’s too expensive to clean and drain the lake etc. they just want the track gone

Pressure from the green climate change lunatics is the reason. NHRA is getting the message that they will be taxed out of existence when this movement goes full throttle, so to speak. We haven’t seen nothing yet, drag racing with open headers is finished.

I’m from Germany and this is sickening to see 🙁
Here in Germany we have no local tracks at all, they where all ruled out until around the 2000s, but we still have the big ones.
Since we are a small country that means they aren’t more than max 7 hours away and some are in a little over 1 hours reach.

But for the USA the closing of all this small tracks is a nightmare since your country is so huge that you need those local tracks to give people a place to enjoy Motorsport and drive!

The most sickening thing is that it’s getting destroyed for an overpass?!
    How insane is that?

Thy couldn’t build the overpass one ore two miles away where there absolutely nothing in the way?
    I can’t believe that’s the reason..

I grew up by Rockingham motor speedway in the 70s and 80s. I have watched the progression of tracks being dropped by NHRA or closed all together. Rockingham is a great track and many fans in that area, just like nascar it's about money. I don't know what else to say. I have many great memories from the past about drag racing, reckon that's it. Sad. 😢 Thanks Clay, hope you guys do well this season. 👍👍🏁🏁🏁

The heyday of drag racing is over……People can't relate to the cars….They are so outlandish and cartoonish looking….Plus it was always an "American thing"….Then Toyota came on board full blast in the mid 2000s and the unlimited money Sheiks and oilmen from Abu Dhabi came over and bought out whatever and whomever they wanted…Alan Johnson anyone?…And the 1000 foot rule came into affect…Just slow the cars down and make them look like real cars for Christs sake……I quit going and racing and watching around that time.
