You ought to read Paul Preston and Pierre Vilar on the Spanish Civil War since for me, especially Pierre Vilar's view of Spanish history, will lend a lot to your narrative style of discussing Historical processes. I don't no Vilar's book was translated into English though, I have only read it in Spanish :(.

Lots of mixed up stuff here. Russia never was a Communist state. It was an Imperialist state embedded in disguise inside the USSR. Moscow extracted, while the Soviet Republics were productive. As long as Matt (and the Left in general) won't acknowledge that and knock off their naive Pro-Russian stance already, they'll just keep running in circles and misinterpret history.
