Alternatively you could have drained the fat into a seperate saucepan and cooked the frozen tots in there first then added them to the meat afterwards..

I changed it up a little bit instead of using bell peppers in recipes I substitute with pablano peppers sometimes I roast them beforehand to bring out the sweetness in the pepper

I've made this for years using hash browns (thaw & add a tad of melted butter), but I'lm gonna try the tots. I layer mine up, and it does great, but I'm gonna do the mix method like you did. I love it that it's 100% versatile with what you can use in it. Yours might be faster, I'll have to see – Thx!
