The cement pad for the wood stove to sit on could have been completed with six to eight two inch thick 24×24 inch patio blocks. I laid down a 10×12 shed pad using this size patio blocks and they weigh 90 pounds each but the two of you can handle that weight easy. I try to research the quick easy way to work with concrete in small areas. 24”x24”x2” thick patio blocks saved me a lot of work because they are made to sit on a flat surface and that’s what your doing.

I have found that spreading the grout with strokes on the diagonal works well and seems to fill the joints better than in a straight stroke. Don't be afraid of the tiles for the adhesive will stay neutral for a little while.
