This is just the first part of a series (likely 6-8 videos) where I will be looking at various replacements for potatoes in a ketogenic diet. This first part is a series of …
The only way to use turnip is to mash it and mix it up with mashed cauliflower it makes a slightly thicker mash.
I use Jicama, it has a slightly apple like sweetness to it so I think it may be interesting to try and make an "apple" pie with it. Having said that the best way I have found to make fries is to cut the jicama into your frie shape, boil them for about 20 minutes, drain. Then coat them in a thin layer of oil and add your seasonings (in a bowl). Place them on a baking sheet or bacon pan and bake them in the oven for about a half hour at between 350-375 depending on how crispy you want them. They end up as crisp as you're going to be able to get them. But they always have the texture of a just undercooked potato.
Air fryer's are the game changer for these fries. Less oil flavor. I can tolerate daikon for that, and also plain red radishes cut into quarters for roasted "red potatoes". Top with butter and herbs and you are gravy! Speaking of… Keto poutine?
Your comment on Turnip fry “I have no use for this” made me snort my coffee this am. 😂
Hey, 'Sconnie neighbor! I enjoy jicama. To me, raw tastes like a cross between a raw potato and an apple. Cooked, it tastes like a potato, but you can't get it to fully soften. I've used it in beef stew. I just wish it would soften. It was beef stew with what felt like undercooked potatoes. The meat cooked to mush in my InstantPot while waiting for the jicama to soften, but it never did. Still, if you can get past that, jicama is the winner. I'd like to try it to see if I could make "apple" pie from it next.
Oh my! Perfect timing! I have jicama that I am going to turn into fries.
felt like a few of those takes he was channelling his inner Ron from parks and recs
❤️❤️❤️ this is awesome. My partner is not keto so anything that he can eat with me makes life much easier.
For fries, I've found that putting pork rinds, cheese and egg whites into the food processor and then cutting out into fry shapes and frying them makes great fries!
The only potato i miss is a baked potato skin with loads of butter and salt
Considering that your test vegetables are root crops, what is the carbohydrate count?
So glad you doing these videos
Man I just got to see this now. Thanks for the nice summary. Also get better soon you, the grandkid & the whole rest of the fam too!
Jicama is the winner! Love it raw as well.
Low Carb Inspirations has a good jicama hash brown chaffle…..I think you could probably come up with one that would make it a GREAT chaffle! I love jicama ……I usually have some fresh cut in my fridge for snacking! Love radishes, but have never tried daikon. But now I have to! Thank you very much for all your experimenting!! I know I can try any one of your recipes and it will not be a waste of pantry supplies 👍
Is there any way we could make chayote squash work as a fried potato?
Just got a deep frier. Time to put it to use!
LMAO. Omg! You are hilarious I needed a good laugh today. Thanks. You are with out a doubt MY FAVORITE!!!!
Once every couple of months I will just have fries from FIVE GUYS. I've gotten pretty good handle on my ketones. I test and weigh daily. My body reacts weird. I normally run about 1.5 on the Ketones. A couple of days ago I tested at 1.5 and went to the movies that night and went ahead and had a bucket of popcorn. Next day I figured my ketones would be down to 1.0 instead they were at 2.5 and have been there a couple of days in a row. I am a numbers guy and want a straight cause and effect, the human body is a strange thing.
Hey Steve. Another winner. Thanks for testing these out. Looks like the Jicama is 2 for 2.
This. Is science!
And I love you for doing this!
Huge time and money expenditure!
<3
Steve I love the idea for this video. You are the only one I know to do this subject! Follow your instincts they are spot on!
I tried making jicama fries that were pre cut from Trader Joe’s and they tasted too sweet for my liking.
