Totally agree with @kndacus. All of these have never gone away. They have all been popular in the south. I'm not a big fan of a few of them. I'm shocked Velveta and Nutella are anywhere on this list. I would like to know how they come up with these list. Lol
Never tasted Nutella. Never owned a smartphone. I'm such a rebel.
Does your canned fish have to come in a TIN for hipsters to think it's cool?
I was unaware that cottage cheese had gone "out of style", that's funny. This whole video with it's take on foods coming and going out of style if funny. I lied. I confess, I didn't make it beyond the cottage cheese.
Back in the 60's, I had access to a military library. During WWI, there was a thing called "Sterilized Processed Assorted Meats". There was a severe shortage of protein for soldiers and people at home, so whatever was available got cooked at very high temperature in an anoxic environment, then canned. (Guess what the process is still used for!) Once SPAM went commercial, that history was cleaned up. The books may still exist somewhere, but it's nowhere online.
Instant noodles and spaghetti ARE NOT THE SAME THING!! Their boiling point is different. It takes 12-15 mins for spaghetti to boil while ramen takes no more than 2. If you tried to make spaghetti with ramen noodles, you'll literally end up with the most soggy, mushed together noodles ever.
I learned how delicious tinned sardines were when I was traveling through Europe in my early twenties. So don’t imply that they’re enjoyed by people of a “certain age”. Take a fresh baguette, smear it with gorgeous European butter and plop some sardines on it. Bottle of cheap white wine and you have the best picnic ever.
When I was a kid, I liked cottage cheese, but I grew up and tried it again after several years and didn't like it. Had it the same way I had it as a kid – with black pepper. Don't care for Spam, but Armour* Treet's pretty good IMO. (You can use Spam and veggies to make Hawaiian ramen 😜) Root beer's good but birch beer's more up my alley.
Except for cabbage I usually have all that in my pantry and fridge. Cottage cheese is the secret ingredient to moist juicy grilled burgers 2 Tbl to a lb add moisture and a little more bulk without losing protein. I use a lactose free cottage cheese for my daughter when cooking for her.
I guess it depends on where you live, but most of these items have never gone out of "style" (i.e., they've always been in common use) in the Southern US.
So many of these were the cheapest and most economical of foods years ago. No longer. Especially when a food item becomes popular the price can skyrocket.
Most of the things on this list are things we, in the South, have always used and will continue to use
For the last 15 years, my family has used Velveeta and Rotel for Super Bowl Sunday
My family has been cooking Spam for breakfast for decades now

Canned sardines have just gotten too expensive for no more than you get in that flat little can!

I feel like cottage cheese, Velveeta, pickles, and tinned fish never went anywhere. Though one I am surprised to see more is lard.
I love the old days lol
Great job! Allie James always deliver amazing narration!
Sardines are god awful nasty!!! 🤢🤮
Velveta makes the best grilled cheese sandwiches and macaroni and cheese.
I still use everything listed, and currently have all mentioned except Ramen and Nutella. I ate way too much ramen as a kid lol!
It’s becoming cheap again and can be used in almost any dish
They never went out of style so maybe younger people might not eat them but they basically stayed in my pantry
I always found cottage cheese revolting. It’s a texture thing
Lol @Mashed slow day for content? None of those really ever went away. Cottage cheese?

Nutella has never gone out of style for me!
Why does the voiceover sound like AI?

Retro means jack up the prices!!!
I didn't think they made Velveeta anymore! I haven't seen it in any stores in like forever. 😯

You know we're just poor, right?
Virgil Root beer is the best. Dr Pepper works better with meats.
Buttermilk with freshly ground cumin and salt is DELICIOUS as a nice, cold drink.
I love cottage cheese with canned peaches and pears, & Ritz Crackers and Triscuits. I drink buttermilk, among other things
been eating "tinned" fish 2-3x a week. Good protein. My fave is lightly smoked sardines.
Good
I wasn’t aware these stopped being used, most of these are staples.
Some interesting stuff

FINALLY spam is on top lol
Cabbage is widely used in Irish stew, with potatoes and Lamb meat.
So many of these were the cheapest and most economical of foods years ago. No longer.

I'm from México, I think that American breakfasts are very delicious, but I also believe that they are very harmful to health.
Spam is overtly salty and just not healthy idk how anyone would eat it
I wish I knew the names of the narrators for this channel!! They are very entertaining!! Great energy!
