Jill, I lived in Kyushu, Japan in the early 50's, (dad was in the Air Force as was yours) and you're so right about how they ate compared to the 'entitled' Americans. I think living there taught me a lot, even though I was so young. It was probably our maid who helped me understand things because being an ADHD kid (before it was even diagnosed) she was given the job of keeping me alive and safe, hahahaha. She was definitely a blessing. I also lived in several 3rd world countries all my life. Be healthy, stay safe and many blessings, Morgan

After becoming more aware of prices I never buy pre cut cabbage, carrots, fruit, lettuce, etc anymore. It's a huge savings and it forces me to mentally meal plan for a week for so when I cut up my own veggies and want to use them up before they get wilted.

I'm in my later 60's. When I was young, white rice was the only option we had. I was just looking through my grandmother's 1961 cookbook 'The Progressive Farmer's Southern Cookbook'. It has a short article 'In Praise of Rice' where it shows how to use rice in main dishes, desserts, salads, breads, and vegetable dishes.

I recently had a bag of brown rice go bad. I forgot about it and you could smell it was rancid as soon as I opened it up. The major danger of eating a diet of mostly white rice isn’t a thing anymore because they enrich it with B1 now.

What about black japonica rice? Not being a smarty pants its a serious question. Since it's not a rice but a grass would it store long term? I don't think it took longer than white rice to cook, it's been a while and it's yummy. Just a thought. Thanks

I didn’t know you can’t store brown rice long term. I ordered 75 lbs of brown rice in 2015 ,and sealed it in 2 later soda pop bottles with twice the amount of oxygen absorbers that it called for. The bottles collapse down tightly against the rice. I just checked them, and there fine, no black mold, and not discolored at all. There 6 1/2 years old ,so I guess you just need to make sure you get all the oxygen out.

Someone may have already asked this but what if you canned brown rice? Would it be shelf stable then? I'm assuming the moisture would be pulled out by the heat of the oven but 🤷‍♀️. I don't like brown rice at all but was genuinely curious.

Wow thanks! Didn’t know that… pretty sure my current bag of brown rice is at least a year old and it hasn’t gone bad yet but I’ll keep eating it. Would love tips for single people who are GF who have other dietary restrictions as well. I wish I could eat more things but unfortunately I have lots of restrictions.

I was taught by my Japanese aunt to store brown rice in the freezer. You cannot long term store brown rice in your pantry. I recently went through the freezer and found a brown rice pack from 3 years ago and it was totally fine because it was frozen.

I was frustrated when I learned how short the life of brown rice was, so I am glad it’s being pointed out a little. I do think it’s a good food and like the idea of having it in short term pantry, but I definitely prefer white rice for longer term.

When you said if there's a crisis you're gonna want to be alive I hit the subscribe button. Lol. You're right, if you're in a food crisis who cares if it's healthy as long as it's food. All those health nuts gonna starve.

I know a lot of seniors who's mental capacity is "lacking" and you find that they are not eating well. They call it the tea and toast syndrome. They eat toast and tea/coffee for breakfast, toast and cheese for lunch and then supper could be toast and soup. After my mother's death my father lived on toast and in four months – four months is all it took – and he forgot my name. You need to have enough variety in your pantry of shelf stable foods and in the good times eat your brown rice and whole wheat bread but have the shelf stable foods to fall back on in lean times.

Can you give some tips for pregnant woman that have nausea/vomiting to keep the frugal lifestyle, because during this period my grocery bill doubles. I can’t cook most of the time, I know this is not forever, but any good advice can help.
