I love cube steak! My grandpa used to make it, taught my mother, and then she taught me.

I wanted to make it for my family, but I can't ever find it at the store anymore 😔 I guess here on the west coast, people stopped buying it or something and so the stores stopped carrying it. So now I make it with hamburger meat instead. It's still good, but it's not as good.

Mmm, good stuff! Takes me back to my childhood. Haven't had cubed steak since I was a young man. Gonna have to try this one out! I liked the bacon fat idea from Unit 38. think I might give it a try sometime!

I never thought of using a crock pot for cube steak, usually used beef stock with some onions cooked stovetop for an hour instead of chicken stock but both could be good? Cube steak is a challenge that can definitely be a tough hit & miss? Thank you for this crock pot recipe idea that always produces tender meat, I’ll have to try it !

Up here in Northern Michigan, we had a slightly similar recipe. Just without breading, to the shock of some. 😬
Brown on both sides, set aside, then use the fat and flour to create a roux, and mix with cream of mushroom soup to make the gravy. Throw in a side of wonderful mashed potatoes, and we're good to go.

I cook mine all the way make gravey and put the cube steak back in the gravey and let it cook and serve over rice or mashed potatoes. My granny's recipe 😋
I also make my gravey with water and milk. I've never done it in the crock pot. I'm born, raised and still living in South Eastern Georgia.

I make my cube steak almost exactly the same way. I discovered the crock pot method several years ago after giving up on ever being able to make a tender cube steak. Oh my goodness the crock pot makes such a difference. Highly recommend!!! Tfs your recipe. ❤

Even if the gravy is a little thin I figure some of the fluid will steam off and thicken the sauce. I used to put the cube steak and gravy in the oven and cook them together. I also put it in the microwave if I was running late anyway it was. always one of my favorites. You know I think good food translates no matter where you're from or what language you speak

This was my son's favorite meal. Except we would use a can of cream of mushroom soup and milk to make the gravy. He's gone now, amost 12 years. RIP Scot. Thanks for the memory.

I grew up eating cube steak. It was cheaper than other cuts of beef. The key was to tenderize it a bit. We used to have it with a salad, something green (beans, spinach, broccoli) and scalloped potatoes.

One of our favorites but I use beef stock in the box or the best beef stock is “Knorr home style beef (and chicken) stock”. Sometimes hard to find and is a little salty so don’t add any salt till you taste. What I would give for that ear of corn!❤️

You hit the nail on the head when you said "It was hard to get it tender, and it was stringy"!! No kidding, yes, that's the awful thing about cube steaks. One time they might come out fork tender, then next time the meat is very tight and tough and loaded with gristle !! Yesterday in fact I made cube steak, and literally threw it down the garbage grinder because it was inedible due to the gristle and toughness of the meat. I floured the meat, browned it on both sides on medium heat for 3" each side, then baked it in the oven at 350F for 35" covered with a mixture of mushroom soup and beef stock. But it was SO TOUGH you could've re-soled your shoes with it. Please tell me that "not once" since you've been cooking your cube steak in the crock pot (browning first), have you ever had tough meat and tons of gristle (please tell me) (LOL), if so, I will RUN and buy cube steaks and try this method. It's EASY to make the flavor good, but HARD to get the meat tender. Thanks EVER so much for sharing your method ! ! !
