Mayonnaise on the asparagus is not all that weird—it is common for fancy restaurants to add hollandaise to asparagus. Hollandaise is like mayonnaise in that they're both emulsions of egg yolk, a fat, and lemon juice. Mayonnaise uses oil, hollandaise uses melted butter. 😀
