This is nothing new, I had vegan tamales growing up in Veracruz in indigenous towns, its a very common thing because tamales can be filled with anything you want, they are just like tacos. I also had bean tamales in Oaxaca and they were very good. The issue is that Mexico being a big country with a big gastronomy, Mexicans from different areas eat different things, so Mexicans from other areas think their way of eating a certain dish is the only and correct way lol I had mole with plantain but if I tell a Mexican from another region they will be weird out by that. This issue expands over to the USA as well and why Mexican Americans grow up ignorant about Mexican cuisine and think how their family cooks their dishes is the only way, or how there is no way Mexicans can eat flour tortilla because thats a "gringo" thing despite flour tortilla originating in Sonora and being a big staple in Northern Mexican cuisine. With that being said, if you are Mexican American, try traveling to different regions of Mexico, you will be amazed with the food diversity that we have, its like being in different countries. Also Mexico has more than 500 tamales varieties, theres a tamal festival in Mexico which I wish they would do that in the USA, you guys would be amazed with what are stuffed in those tamales, and a lot of those are super indigenous that our ancestors have been eating over thousands of years.

I make vegan tamales every year for my birthday and for Christmas! And I have to say I enjoy them more than the non vegan ones! Because when I would eat the meat ones I would get grossed out by the meat most of the time. You just have to add the right amount of seasoning to make your food taste good😊

I really like that this channel isn't overly pushy about trying vegan dishes. I just don't know how to go about getting all the ingredients. I'd love to see some vegetarian recipes too!

I loved this one! These reactions are everything! Being Latina and vegan I felt like I was giving up on my food culture because so many family recipes we have include meat but I quickly learned how to substitute things out. Interestingly enough, pre-colonization, a lot of indigenous groups in what is now Mexico (and other parts of Latin America) ate a lot more plant foods so I feel now that I’m rediscovering my original roots the more whole plant food recipes I try to create :).
