Processed cheese… a no no. At least for my home. White bread doesn't come in my home, stays at the store… another no no.
A Patty melt, can be made with real cheese and better bread. If you want to eat healthy. I commend your efforts for this 1940's recipe!

I missed the point where you put in the green chile.
To use Swiss cheese, mix 1 slice American with 4 slices of Swiss. After they melt together, the emulsifiers in the American will allow the Swiss to melt smoothly.

You guys are cracking me up. I can tell you love cheese. Of course I love cheese too. I will be making this on sourdough bread with colby and swiss cheese slices on 2 patties.

Cut the fat kill the burger. Try this again with a medium grind of 100% ground round, and form the patties loosely on wax paper w a rolling pin. Make sure it’s room temp first. Better than smash. Your welcome.

I LOVE patty melts, a good Reuben is close second, but I like my patty melts with rye bread and swiss cheese – American is OK too, even tried both once and it was god too. I knew about the mayo instead of butter a while ago but some butter in the skillet or on the griddle is helpful.
