I really wanted to try this cake. Couldn't find the baking gumdrops or candied cherries. Then I remembered you saying just use what you have. So… I cut up dried fruit and soaked it in ginger brandy to replace the cherries and cut dots in half to replace the smaller baking gumdrops. The cake is amazing. So much better than fruitcake. Thank you for the inspiration.

Love it! I make a very light fruitcake called a "Duchess Cake" For me I have no problem with fruitcake but I don't like the glace fruit at all. It's too sweet and the texture is not one I like. The duchess cake is light in color and doesn't have to have booze in it. It's not spicy but more lemon zesty and candied citrus peel along dried fruits like cherries, apricots, craisins etc. I never thought to add any candies or gummies. Very cute idea.

Update! For those in the US: I found the baking gums online. It would be coming from Canada and the shipping cost for a $10.00 1 kg package would be $25.00! I saw some other sellers charging $100 or $119 so I don't think I'll be making this cake soon! 🤣 Oh well… I will keep Julie's handwritten recipe for possible future use! 🥰

I have never even heard of a gumdrop cake before watching your channel and hearing you and Julie talk about it! Sounds amazing! I will definitely have to give this a try because fruit cake is disgusting to my hubby and daughter. But they LOVE gumdrops!

Julie's calling it juju cake, so I'm thinking that the jujubes that I mentioned in my earlier comment are the same as the baking gums that you gave us a link to. I don't know how it is in Canada, but in the United States, what we call gumdrops are larger and softer and coated with sugar.

*variation alert. No cherries. So, I added the zest and juice of a large mandarin for an orange pineapple twist. I almost added more mandarin zest, but showed a little restraint. I threw in a couple tbsp of orange blossom water that I had. I used 600g regular gum drops. I will check at 3.5 hours @350°F. Fingers crossed! Batter tastes amazing! In the oven it goes…

I am fascinated by this! I live in the US midwest, have never heard of this or baking gumdrops.
I intend to make this, and the earlier video with applesauce and raisins.
My only hope is to source baking gums without a giant shipping charge.

Never heard of baking gumdrops before, but this is why I love this channel. I learn new things all the time. In my research I came across a gumdrop cake recipe and she makes a pound cake and "Nutty Club" Baking Fruitlets not found in the US of course. I also found Glen's first Gum Drop Cake Recipe from Feb 1, 2020. If you are a raisin fan this one for you! https://youtu.be/E8fsuE6AG-0

Found your fruitcake video from 4 yrs ago — wish you'd had a cutaway shot of your Gumdrop cake. I'm dying to see it up close, with the harder-than-jujus interspersed in the cake. How fun!

My mom has a "wine cake" that she makes every year. I am personally not a fan, so I do not know the entire method for making it, but I do know it involves soaking a candied peel and fruit mix in the wine. There are usually several distant family members that request it, and she bakes them in bread loaf pans, wraps the entire thing in foil and plastic, and sends it to them by various means.
