Jimmy Buffett actually wrote “Cheeseburger in Paradise” in Tortola, BVI. He did, however make a deal with Le Select that allowed them to have cheeseburger in paradise on their menu in exchange for an open tab for Jimmy whenever he visits St. Barts

St Barts was a wonderful place to visit with my late wife. Everything is gorgeous and clean and driving on the island is like riding on a roller coaster. You failed to mention that all beaches are topless and Saline is clothing optional. We ate at L'esprit several times and once with David Letterman and family at the next table. It is a place for rich and famous but is very casual in tone. We stayed at L'Auberge at the NW end an it had its own beach. The only difficulty is getting there by plane from St Martins as the flights are very irregular and never on time but the 15 minute flight is fantastic.

For many of the last 35 years, I was Chief Engineer and ETO Officer on small tankers working in the Eastern Caribbean.
St Barts was one of our regular calls to supply the gasoline and diesel for the island.
Most of the tourista traps were overpriced, but we loved the old Swedish Embassy when we had a chance to go ashore.
The Magras supermarket had great cheese and wine at affordable prices, some of the best Roquefort I've ever tasted, it must travel well.
Much as I love French cuisine, most of the restaurants were pretentious and catered for those with more money than either taste buds or sense. How about US$125 for 3 langouste pot au feu with a single scoop of rice and pigeon peas? Me neither.
Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful island, but being destroyed by those going there. Traffic is a total nightmare, logjam from dawn to dusk and beyond.
Flying in and out is something I've done many times, never had any problems, just hoping the brakes work close to the end of the runway, or we're getting wet feet.
If you intend to go there, make it in the summer, all the snowbirds have gone and it's (relatively) quiet. At all costs, avoid any time from early December to mid January when it's close to impossible to get around.

Somehow, someway you need to do some travel videos or some sort of vacation
and/or travel blog. Please don't misunderstand, I really enjoy your cooking and
shipboard stuff but the times you visit places onshore are really great also. Your
shipmates seem to be good friends too.

During my time in the RN I spent 6 months in the Caribbean (West Indies Guard Ship). Never got to St. Barts but pretty much visited the rest of the islands. Lovely place.
