I wouldn't park right beside a main roadway because it's hard to tell if a vehicle is broken down or if someone is inside at night and you might attract the wrong kind of curiosity. You'd be better off trying to stay out of such open view from vehicles passing by on the road.

You should have gotten a tent for the roof of your vehicle. Something Jeep people do all the time.
If you are overlanding in the US you have to go to Florida in the winter to escape the cold. Even the desert gets cold.
In the USA they we call people with no home homeless.
