Cabbages are $1.29 a pound now, I find that high. We're in Northern BC. Ten years ago, it was thirty two cents a pound, and I think that last year, it was well under a dollar. Last year, we bought packages of pork loin for $6.00, and yesterday, they had a price tag of $16.00!!! And to think that we are being told that its going to get worse…..time to take a deep breath and get creative.

Toni thanks for this. Worrisome indeed. How much of this is price gouging? Perhaps the politicians that are vying for our votes on June 2nd can address real issues such as this as opposed to empty promises. I think they need to see this video.

Hi Tony, new to your channelโ€” watched an old video where you were going to try Spam. Recommend you fry it, I find if I fry it like bacon, cut not too thick and cooked a little crispy around the edges itโ€™s better.

Down here in the states economic website are saying that we are suffering inflation at rate not seen in 40 years. I remember the what happened in the 70s, we were just starting out and it was hard going for a few years. I remember eating peanut butter and homemade jelly sandwiches and drinking lots of koolaid. ๐Ÿ˜–

Thank you for making this video. I live in Eastern Ontario and it's totally disgusting how the prices keep going up on EVERYTHING! Plus it seems that there's only certain sizes now available. Like pet food and cat litter. Certain prescription medications aren't available in certain milligrams! Definitely scary and concerning. I'm on a fixed income, it's becoming very challenging!

Hey Toni, thanks for the update. I did some grocery shopping with a list today. I still could not make myself buy meat at Krogerโ€™s. I did get 20 pounds of potatoes because they were 5lb bags on sale for .97 cents. The 10lb bags were almost $7.00 each. I was able to get 18 eggs for $1.89 so that was good too. Those were my only deals of the day. I do know that the 8.9% inflation rate the government claims is incorrect. It is very concerning here too. Itโ€™s always good to see you!

Eggs have jumped a dollar for an 18-pack: was $1.49, now $2.49 My biggest sticker shock moment was coffee: it went from $6.99 for a can of Folgers to $11.79! Whatever "economist" says inflation is 6.9% has obviously never gone grocery shopping! FWIW, I read China's lockdowns affect 400 million people. That's a lot of production at a stand still! It takes about a month for container ships to cross the Pacific, so even if China went back to work today, it's going to take time to re-start factories, move product to the docks, and then cross over the ocean. There was conjecture June will be the start of very lean times. I don't propose panic buying, just consider your individual needs and prepare accordingly. I'm thinking a 90-day supply to get through? Thank you for your list and calculations!

We are seeing similar increases in butter, cream and milk. I am gluten sensitive, so I had been stocking up on alternative 'flours' for the past few months. Just got five pounds of sweet onions for $3.79 to make onion stock. Should make about 14 pints. I have been stocking olive oil, coconut oil, and avocado oil for the past two plus years. My husband does a lot of our shopping, and shops what we call the 'abused' foods sections. You know, the produce that may be a few days past prime–It can be dehydrated and powdered or canned. The 'abused' meats are the same. The butcher where we do most of our shopping lets us know when there are especially good deals. Nearly all of this meat ends up canned. Our chickens are laying lots of eggs. I dehydrate and powder the excess. I have a few gallons of eggs in pickling lime, but the dried and powdered ones take up much, much less room in storage. I had a wild hair this spring and decided to plant a few naked–hull-less–oats. I have about 64 sq. feet of oats!! WooHoo, right. But it is experience I'm after. Also planted some grain amaranth, comfrey, and red clover for our birds as well as for ourselves. Also many more herbs (and Gladyses! lol) than I have in the past.

Toni, have you checked the chicken prices ? As for Jars, over here in the UK, canning is not a big thing and we have very few outlets offering the goods, the best place is Amazon where, I just got 12 X 250ml / 8.5fl oz jars for ยฃ17.88 which is about $28.22 Canadian. Was looking to do some ghee, but our butter price has jumped in the last month, so now not sure if it is worth it ๐Ÿ™

Excellent analysis, Toni. The five items you chose were the most relevant for proving your point…. the exact same five I would have picked. Also, the five that are the hardest to prep for, due to the fact that they do not necessarily store very well, even canned or otherwise well-packaged,. And, to my taste, the substitutes do not even approach the flavor of their fresh forms. Most people do not understand how the government statistics on inflation are ridiculously lower than what they are seeing with their own eyes at the store. They don't realize that the govt leaves food and energy completely out of their calculations. It's easy to rig the numbers you want, when you leave out the statistics that affect people the most. The people are just stupid sheep, after all, according to them.

That's bonkers! ๐Ÿ˜จ I'm so worried for families with small children. They will be lost as how to deal with this craziness.

Hi Toni – absolutely great video these updates are wonderful. There may be reasons for those price increases in flour, and eggs. Last year there was a drought both in the US and Canada which greatly affected the wheat yields and other grains, also with the conflict in the Ukraine, which is a major grain producer for Europe and Asia, will have an affect on our grain prices as well driving them up. The egg prices may be due to the recent bird flu epidemic which has resulted in destruction of whole flocks of chickens, both layers and meat birds – so expect to see increases in the cost of chicken as well this year, not sure when or how much, it will depend on how many flocks get destroyed. As for dairy products – that could be the combine result of the strangle hold the milk marketing board has on farmers with their quota system, and forced dumping of excess milk production and a decision by Mr T. a few years ago to further restrict our dairy producers – it has caused the collapse of a number of dairies – 2 in my immediate vicinity have had to shut down. Prices at stores in our large city area have increased substantially – a 4 litre jug of milk has risen from $3.85 to 4.95 and out in the rural area stores it is as high as $8.25 at the co-op for the same jug of milk (whole milk). My parents were dairy farmers and there have been issues for years with the marketing board – it has now gotten so bad that the average person is now seeing the problem through large price increases.

WOW! These are basic products nothing fancy things we all use. How are your milk prices in Canada. Our cheapest was $1.69 a gallon at Walmart a little over a year ago, today $3.09. My family is grown but I still have grandchildren. That is why I purchased powder milk at $9.96 for 10-1 quart envelopes, they use to be available in our local Walmart now only available online I bought 5 boxes the shelf life is 2 years.
I want to experiment with making yogurt with powdered milk.

Everything I buy has gone up very fast. One example, not food was a 4 ft folding table for my greenhouse. I paid $32. I then decided I needed one more. A week later that same table at the same place was $48. These price increases are concerning, you are right!

Good Vid Toni. It's important to discuss these things. Very concerning and ominous. I try to keep a close eye on Geo politics via independent media to get different perspectives. Things will likely get very bad here as in N America, but we may fair better than rest of the world. Europe may collapse due to their policies. I watch you and a few other faves out of Canada. On a side note it's funny, I think of California as more a foreign country than Canada. Do Canadians feel the same?
On inflation, I know in the US, the two most important things that effect everybody equally, food and fuel, are not included in the reported inflation figure. Our gov't can yell from the rooftops inflation is only 8%, but reality is it may be 15-20% and going hyper.
One thing I enjoy is Half and Half in my coffee. It's a must for me so I rarely look at it's price. But a half gallon (2 liters?) Is over $4.00 and has been limited since the pandemic here in FL where I'm at and we have robust dairy farming. Its a big agricultural state.

Thanks for your update Toni. As a fellow Ontarian who lives in cottage country, I look forward to your TO perspective. Our prices up here are more expensive than Toronto especially in the summer when the city people come up to their cottages.
A couple of videos back you did the math on powdered milk. If you find you like it (which I do for cooking) then do the math for the 10kg bags from Costco. I purchased a non fat 10kg bag for $89 and a whole milk bag for $149. If I mix them 1/2 and 1/2 than I have 2% milk…..food for thought!!! Have a great day

I like the updates, thanks. Nice to know there are other people in the same boat as I am. I've had to switch to online ordering for canning jars from Walmart, their prices are beating the other competition. So far no problem with them arriving in one piece. I ordered a variety of beans to store for my family who aren't putting anything away. That order is coming in a split up delivery, which seems to be the norm from Walmart lately. No problem waiting here. I understand the brand love for flour, I have my favorite too. King Arthur used to be around $3.49 now it's fluctuating at around $4.50.
